clo_again: (Andy/Roger - Pieces)
I'm supposed to be writing but instead I'm coughing with the Hideous Cold of Doom and trawling tumblr, so have a stolen-from-tumblr meme to get me back in the mood.

Rules: go to page 7 of your WIP*, skip to the 7th line, share 7 sentences, and tag 7 more writers to continue the challenge.

There's going to have to be a few mods, because I have at least three (four? five?) what might be classed as wips at the moment, and I don't think there's 7 writers left around LJ to challenge. So instead, have the seven-sentences-from-the-seventh-line of what I'm currently writing:

lines )

Things I have learned from this exercise; I run my sentences on way too long. Also, I have too many WiPs. These are only the ones I have typed and actually started, although the last one needs major rewrites so that won't be the seven sentences after the seventh forever. Still.

Life continues on. I've caught the Dreaded Lurgy this week but motored through it by going to work, which led to me sitting at my desk wrapped in my scarf like a blanket yesterday and croaking when anyone asked me a question. I'm feeling somewhat better tonight but I thought I was feeling better Wednesday night, and Thursday night, and then I felt like death from 4am Friday onwards, so I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.

Otherwise, everything is fine. New Job is still fine, although I have to organise an inspection for something I'm responsible for in March, and the previous job's incumbent left only scrappy notes on what she'd done towards the action plan for it, so that'll be fun. I keep thinking I should know everything because that's how everyone acts and then I realise I've only been doing the job for barely four months and I've got shit done in that time. It'll be fine. *touch wood*

In conclusion: still aten't ded, despite the best efforts of the common cold. I should be writing but I'm avoiding it. Nothing particularly exciting is going on right now. Except The Voice is back tonight so I get Ricky Wilson's face on the tellybox again for a bit, yay.

So, you know. As you were.

*I somehow completely missed that I was supposed to do this from page seven and not just the seventh line, and now I'm too lazy to redo it. So. Whatevs.

Just so this entry wasn't oh-god-she's-rambling-about-that-bloody-wizard-show-again, I did this meme what I stole from [livejournal.com profile] kindoftrouble and [livejournal.com profile] mayakitten:

You can learn a lot about someone by the music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your iPod or mp3 player and write down the first 20 songs. No cheating or skipping songs that are shameful. That is the fun!

1. Someone Like You - Adele (Radio 1 live version)
2. Center of the Universe - Built to Spill
3. About Today - The National
4. For the Reunion - Nobuo Uematsu (instrumental)
5. In The Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
6. Lovina - Maria Kalaniemi & Aldargaz (instrumental)
7. Letters From the Sky - Civil Twilight
8. Heard It Through The Grapevine - DAAS (live)
9. Secretariat - Jeffrey Foucault
10. Saturday - Chris Garneau
11. Something's Gotta Give - Kane
12. Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World
13. New Song - Terra Naomi
14. Dancing in the Moonlight - Toploader
15. Starlight - Muse
16. Africa - Toto
17. Honey - The Hush Sound
18. Pop Music of the Future - Say Hi To Your Mom
19. All the Umbrellas in London - The Magnetic Fields
20. If I Wrote You - Dar Williams

Considering I have all my random Halloween music on my iPod shuffle, that could've gone a lot worse.

One day I will actually make a proper RL post again. Hhmm.

Life continues to be fine. I continue to spend too much money that I should be saving, fail at writing motivation (and indeed motivation for anything), watch too much TV and go to Pets At Home once a week to spend fifteen minutes talking to the rats and thinking wistfully what I'd name them if I knew I'd be in any place to look after them forhowevermanyyears. Sigh. I did almost adopt a dwarf hamster named Milo today but I have no idea where my hamster cage is.

(I may yet look for it and go back. He was adorable and his last owner didn't want him. Sadface for tiny unwanted hamsters.)

...That's pretty much it. I'm not so much with the interesting right now. Oh [livejournal.com profile] jesse_kips! I'm planning to head to Manchester in the evening of Tuesday March 1st to see Jasper Fforde talk in Waterstone's (assuming I can still get a ticket! I need to call them). Don't know if you could make it but Jasper's awesome (I can't remember if I recced you his books? You totally should read them; it's like crime and literature and humour and you will love them) and worth going to see if you can make it. I'll be getting in about 5:30pm anyway, so let me know if it's doable for a meet-up. :D

...Yeah, that's pretty much it. As you were, y'all.

But uh, I have had work and then a bit of a mental day yesterday, which is why you're getting a three-in-one deal.

My mental day yesterday means that I'm pretty much sorted for Christmas-related things now though, thankfully. A little worried that only one of four internationally-posted things have shown up so far - [livejournal.com profile] scoobydumblonde, [livejournal.com profile] chickybee32 and [livejournal.com profile] dukkehjem, could you let me know whenever anything turns up for you?

And now, back to a music meme.

December 17th: 04. a song that makes you sad

This is kind of self-explantory really. I loved university more and more every year I was there; if I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd travel to see the places I want to see and then I would go back to university (or 'college' if I went to America). And there I'd like to stay forever, even if I know it'd never be the same as Flat 7 at Lancaster Uni, even if they are making it all about the money instead of the knowledge, even if I was surrounded by teenagers when I was fifty. I love being surrounded by people who want to learn, and finding tutors who actually want to teach you. I'd like to go to universities all over the world and be taught in other languages and take degrees in anything.

Well. Maybe not maths.

My parents just got home after a weekend of having the house to myself. We're already arguing after five minutes. Sigh. I do like my parents a lot more when we're not all living in the same place. Or indeed, when we don't see each other at all. If I could move to Australia and be on the other side of the world from them constantly, I'd probably say that we got on quite well.

Now I'm going back to watch the World Cup Showjumping at Olympia for as long as possible, until the parentals demand the TV. Sigh.

December 16th: 03 - a song that makes you happy

There was only ever really one contender for this. I considered Tim Minchin's Canvas Bags or Bright Eyes' First Day of My Life (that is possibly my favourite music video ever; you must watch it) but, really, no song makes me more inexplicably happy than Boston's 'More Than A Feeling'. You can listen to the whole song here.

BUT. You don't want to watch it on that boring vid. You want to watch it on the Barclays ad where the guy rides the rollercoaster to work, don't you? Yeah, me too:

While looking this song up on Youtube, I also came across this marvellous Nirvana clip that makes it obvious how similar 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is to 'More Than A Feeling' (which I didn't notice and now will never be able to notice anything else. And I like Nirvana; there will be more Nirvana songs in this meme).

And to conclude, have 'More Than A Feeling' done Scrubs style here.

December 15th: 02. your least favourite song

I thought about putting the incredibly irritating Go Compare guy for this (it's reached the point where I will actually switch channels/mute the tv to shut him up) but I'm not sure he even qualifies as a song so much as blatant annoyance tactics to make you remember the stupid website. So, instead have this:

I don't know what it is about this song that winds me up in all the wrong ways. The annoying earworm of a chorus, the whiny tone, I don't know. I just know that I wince every time it comes on the radio. I haven't even watched this Youtube vid to check it's the right one because I don't want to risk getting it stuck on annoying repeat in my head.

There are probably songs I do *hate* more but I don't tend to keep songs that I hate lying around, so thinking of them on the spot is hard. This'll do.

I was going to wait to do this until next month, when [livejournal.com profile] kindoftrouble finished, to save flists from being all song memes but I need something to make me post again and I feel like posting more to enjoy my Christmas LJ layout while I can have it, so. Plus if I wait until January, I'll have forgotten it and never do it anyway. It doesn't really matter if it runs over half a month and half another. Maybe we can create a new month. Decanuary: like February 29th, it only exists once every four years or whenever it's convenient!

Yes. Anyway.

December 14th: 01 - your favorite song

I thought this was going to be terribly hard to pick, then I went on iTunes to see which my most played song was and it was this. Which actually is pretty much as close to a favourite song I could have (years of listening to it later, it's still always on my iPod, I enjoy it every time and still think it's a beautiful song, both music and lyrics).

I originally heard this on a Stargate SG-1 Jack/Daniel fanvid by butterfly (it's a stunning vid, well worth the dl if you haven't seen it). There is a Sarah Fimm-only version which is a little bit more sparse, with a bit more of an edge to it and I like that one too, but not as much as I like the mix version.

In other news, as of today I am the proud owner of a mug with this Softer World strip on, courtesy of http://www.yourdesign.co.uk/ (I agonised for a while over which Softer World to chose and in the end went with this because it always makes me smile and this was only kind of a test-order anyway, to see how it came out). It looks wonderful and I rather want an entire set of Softer World mugs now, only at £8 a mug they are pushing my limit of "worth it", no matter how cool.

That said, they have a Facebook group on which they post discount offers and the P&P is free in the UK. The print quality is superb and the writing is perfectly readable. Suspect I will be ordering more in future, with custom Softer Worlds on especially since the strips are the exact right size to wrap-around.

I feel a proper Andy/Roger Softer World mug is essential in my life. Now just to get the right strip for it.

(They also do custom rhinestone t-shirt designs. I'm not even going to contemplate some sort of tennis slash logo in sparkly rhinestones to wear to Wimbledon next year.

Mostly because it's too tempting.

Also, I think my other idea of I'm rooting for Roger Federer, while hilarious to me personally, may cause some serious double-take damage to all the Australians in the queue.)

They are predicting lots of snow for us from Thursday. Am torn: want snow but desperately need Saturday to finish Xmas shopping, get my hair cut and hopefully see Voyage of the Dawn Treader which I've looked forward to for well over a year now. To do that, I need trains to be running. I also really can't afford to miss more work, although it's not such a big deal whichever train/bus/hot air balloon I catch to get me there as I get paid the same even if I'm just in work for an hour or a day. So...I'd like snow? But not so much that all the trains stop running.

Well, look at that. The meme did make me post after all. Hhhmmm.

Day five: a youtube clip

Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

Day four: a site

After some hmm-ing and haw-ing between this and Tor, I decided to go with http://www.structuredprocrastination.com/. Why? Because I was procrastinating a week or so back and reading the essay on the main page, along with another essay there regarding Procrastinators as Perfectionists, has helped a lot in making me write more over the last week. The last couple of days or so I've really started pushing into couch-potato territory again, so I'm going to reread the essays and I expect, again, they'll help. It's also really nice to know that I'm far from being the only person in the world to put important stuff off like this. (For example, my grad application still hasn't been looked at because right now I'm telling myself relearning to write is more important because it's what I want to do. Yeah.

If you're like me and tend to put things off and off for no particular reason, it's a really helpful site. Or if you're one of those (sorry, but to us procrastinators you kind of are sometimes ;) ) irritating people who has no problem with motivation? It might help you to get a little less pissy with us next time we miss our deadlines.

Day five: a youtube clip

I can't remember if I recced this when I first saw it but it's worth reccing again: Elephant Jumping on a Trampoline by Nicholas Deveaux. Have you ever seen that incredibly cute LJ icon of an elephant bouncing up and down on a trampoline with its trunk waving up and down? This is where it's from. Maybe everyone else knew that but I only found it a month or so back (through Twitter? Though I can't remember who) and there was much glee. Just that someone out there has put time and money into making this, makes me so unspeakably happy with humanity.

~

[livejournal.com profile] composim, the book was posted this morning. :D Hope it gets there okay.

Actually re. the book, my mother proved once again why sometimes I just don't want to be related to her. She was all "But you're just paying the postage?! You're just GIVING IT AWAY? You can't afford it! That's really stupid!"

And I said "...Hello, working? Plus you just spent the same as the postage on a banana cake you didn't need but just have to have. Don't you ever just want to do something nice for people for, you know, the sake of making people happy?"

She didn't really have an answer for that but she didn't agree. -_- Seriously, I like my generation a whole lot better. On the whole we like to do nice things for other people. It's a good way to approach life.

On which note, I really need to go answer emails, LJ comments and let the cat out. :) And try to pick just one quote for tomorrow because seriously? One? :-/

I couldn't decide what to do for this, and this is somewhat halfhearted because I really can't be bothered turning on the desktop to use the scanner, but...

Because the parentals are away for the weekend and I can put off loading the dishwasher until SUNDAY if I so feel:

• Post ten of any pictures currently on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.
• NO CAPTIONS! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.
• They must ALREADY be on your hard drive - no googling or flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you've saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.
• You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.

(This was hard. At first because Harry II doesn't have that many pictures on him yet (I've only been using him for about six months, discounting travel when I took Beaver instead) and I was considering using photos I'd taken which I didn't think was the point, and trying to avoid anything too obvious like stuff I'd posted before or rambled on about or that would have everyone going "...Been there, seen that." Then it was different-hard because I went back to my desktop to look for pictures and there were too many.)

I still don't know which ones I'm going to pick because I've uploaded more than ten possibles. So. Surprise (several v. large pictures under the cut btw)! )

As you can perhaps tell from the icon, I enjoyed Inkheart yesterday. I found the book hard going for the first two-thirds and I probably would've put it down in frustration if I hadn't loved the character of Dustfinger enough to keep turning pages. Likewise Paul Bettany was definitely the best thing about the film, lickable hipbones and all (was it just me or did Brendan Fraser seem a little... lost in this film? He was a good casting choice, he just seemed to sit a little uncomfortably in the middle of everyone as if afraid of putting a foot wrong) but the rest of it made for much easier going than the book. I loved the way they did the writing over everyone. I need to find a god picture of Resa so I can icon her with hers. Or the unicorn, because there's something unspeakably cool about a white unicorn with black text all over it.

So I'll probably be buying it on DVD at some point, if just to icon every second of Paul Bettany. Mmmmmmm.

We also went back to the Yummy Cupcake cafe (:DDD) and I saw Lancaster library for the first time, despite spending three years of uni walking past it. It's actually kinda cool and I really should've looked in there before.

And now for something completely different... family rantage )

[livejournal.com profile] kindoftrouble asked about:

This icon was one of those 'see the picture, love the picture, icon the picture'. It's so old - must be almost three or more years now, my oldest tennis icon that I still use - that I can't remember making it, except I think the magazine it was in had printed little cartoon tennis balls across the picture and either cropping around them was a pain or I smudge-tooled one out. It's annoying that the original picture is buried somewhere on my other computer so I can't check. Smudge-tooling out a tennis ball might explain some of the glare-effect in the bottom right but that was also the grainy quality of the magazine scan. When I upped the contrast it gave the icon this natural texture that I still like three years later.

The quote - which reads LAUGH like no one is watching - is a slightly-bastardized version of the quote "Dance like nobody's watching. Love like you've never been hurt. Sing like nobody's listening. Live like it's heaven on earth." which Googling suggests has been attributed to everyone and their aunt, so I'm just calling it an anonymous. It didn't take much thinking to match the quote to the icon. Andy looks so happy. There should be more icons of Andy looking happy, because it's really sweet.

This icon came about solely because I wanted to try that nifty light effect, like traffic and shop signs blurring past in the dark. I don't remember where the original picture came from - I think it was Spaced, because I always kind of saw it as Tim peering through a keyhole at something, one of those vague Spaced plot bunnies that I never did anything with but it could've been Simon Pegg in something else and I just liked the screencap. The idea that it looks sort of sneaky is also where the 'SECRETS' came from; it didn't look finished without a word and that fit. The tiny writing underneath is probably a song lyric but I've forgotten which one; it was mainly to underline the key word.

I'm sort of half-happy with it. The light effect didn't quite work and if I did it again I think I'd change the green at the bottom to yellow so there're less colours, and probably pick a different font. But I love the contrast on Simon's face. I might remake the whole icon without the light effect at some point because that contrast is so pretty.

From the most ancient icons to the newest. ^_^ This was another attempt at the light effect, though I desaturated all the light-effect textures before using them to avoid the rainbow colours again. I think it looks more like blurred car headlights without the colours, like it was meant to. The whole thing was made in a hurry because I really wanted some John Simm icons and I didn't have a huge choice of pictures to hand. This was from a magazine instead of a screencap but it was a pain in the ass to get small enough without losing the facial detail and I think I lost a lot of the pose in the cropping. Rabbit in headlights was a desperate attempt to find any text that fit, because all that empty space the cropping left needed filling to make it less dull and it was rabbit in headlights was because... well, he has that look of a rabbit caught in headlights. Sort of. I'm still not entirely sure the whole icon works and I've got more pretty Simm pictures now, so there'll be other Simm icons. This one might just stay around to fill up the 300 icons spaces I'll never actually need on IJ.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] kindoftrouble! Did you know the Black Books shop-front is an actual bookshop? Can we maybe take a Black Books side trip to see it in June? ^____^

~

Now I'm going to not watch the Black Books commentaries yet again (I keep getting sidetracked and missing bits, so it's not entirely like I'm listening to them over and over again. Uh. Really.) Instead I'm going to go tidy the leaning tower of death clean washing that's been piling up on my bed for days.

And maybe at the same time listen to the Shaun of the Dead cast commentary, which is in no way like listening to the Black Books again. They don't even mention it. Much. Ahem.

[livejournal.com profile] scoobydumblonde asked about:

This one has a quote from Red vs Blue, a hilarious Halo-based series that Wikipedia explains far better than I could. I originally came across it through the quote "Time...line? Time isn't made of lines! It's made of circles. That's why clocks are round." which appeared on an icon I found and have since lost from this computer. Such a genius quote demanded Googling, which brought up Red vs Blue, which made [livejournal.com profile] hill2k burn some of to DVDs for me and happiness was had all round.

I think for this particular icon, I wanted something with a quote on it because I'd been seeing all these just-text icons around and though they were nifty. Knowing the awesome of RvB, I checked out IMDb's quote list for it, picked this one because I liked the sarcasm and... that's about it. It's been on and off my icon list for a couple of years until I got the extra icon space on IJ and reuploaded it. I don't have much occasion to use it but I like it and one day I'll need to be really really sarcastic about something. And when I do, I have the exact icon for it.

I originally typed 'this icon doesn't need as much explaining as the first', only to realise that it did. A few years back, Guinness made a stunning advert as part of their 'Good things come to those who wait' marketing angle, involving surfers waiting for the perfect wave. It was then, and still is now, my favourite advert ever but it took me a couple of years to think to Google it, which is when I found it on this website (click on 'Quicktime and credits: Guinness: "Surfer" under the pictures to play the ad). It was duly screencapped and I made quite a few icons but this is the one that stuck and has stayed for a few years now. I love the image of the surfer with the surf-horses poised over him. It's beautiful and like fantasy and at the same time, a really neat trick. Plus the advert has quotes from Moby Dick. It's so random and yet so apt, I never get tired of watching it.

I'm not too keen on the slightly fuzzy effect I had a liking for back when I made it though. I think it's time to be hunting out those old screencaps.

You can also watch the ad (and all the slightly varied versions they showed of it, just search 'Guinness surfer') on youtube.

Compared to the last two, this icon is a totally newbie; I only made it a couple of months ago. I realised I didn't have any just-Roger icons anymore which made me sad, because he is still my favourite tennis player even if I'm not so good at keeping up the tennis right now. I knew I wanted a more introspective Roger icon because he'd been having a tough month or so and everyone was shouting about the Great Federer falling from grace, while I wanted to say well you know, you've built him up and up and really, he's just a person underneath, he's not the shining image he can be made out to be. The picture was easy; I've been collecting Roger pictures for years. The quote is from an Evanescence song 'Breathe No More' (lyrics) which I haven't actually heard. I don't even like Evanescence all that much anymore, because I find them a little whiny, but when looking for icon quotes I go through various bands that I know have lyrics to suit the kind of icon-mood I'm aiming for until I find something to fit. This time Evanescence said it exactly right.

I am so very happy with this icon, unlike the other two which are old and were made back when I was still only half-competent in Photoshop. I like the colours and the sharpness and the font. The only thing that annoys me if that I had to make 'the difference between' so small to fit that it's just edged into unreadable but in those cases I tend to go with it and use it as keywords, so those who want to know can look it up. Weirdly, it's also one of the six icons LJ kept for me after my paid account expired even though I didn't use it all that often.

I also really really love this icon because doing this post, it reminded me Andy was playing Roger and I hadn't checked when. Went to the TV, flicked to the sports channels - and their match was literally just starting. So. Much. Love.

So there you go, ask about my icons and you will get essays. You get a cookie if you made it this far. ;) Now ask me to pick your icons! Pick more of mine for me to essay about! The world needs more icon squee.

And now I am off to watch Andy vs Roger. :D If this is too long, let me know and I'll cut it.

I've spent today on and off, trawling Google for good Daniel/Jack recs which, to be honest, didn't take me much past the second page because it's a pairing with a longer history than some, maybe most. No idea what set me off on SG-1 again because it's been nothing but Atlantis repeats on TV for forever but a whim or randomly sparking neurons or something kept me at it all day, through some great post-apocalypse Sam/Daniel/Jack and a few old favourites like Shalott's beautiful Reveille until, just now, I hit this:

The Cost of a Used Spaceship by Marie Blackpool. Oddly gen Jack/Daniel, Daniel's pov through a talk with the replica!Jack from so many seasons ago I'd almost forgotten them. It's a subtle, quiet fic that eases you on through Daniel's thoughts until you're realising right about the time he does that you're left grieving for someone who isn't even dead; one of the things I love most about AU and parallel worlds is the deaths of familiar-but-AU characters and how can you grieve for someone you saw die when they, your version, is still standing right next to you? And it's one of the rare fics out there that does just enough to leave you hopeful rather than confident but still happy it ended there because another word would've been one too much.

And I cried. Would've done even if I didn't miss this pairing more than I care to admit often and any day now I'm going to remember how much I still love this show when I have the spare cash lying around to start buying it on DVD.

Now for a cheap 'n cheerful meme, since [livejournal.com profile] lillyv tagged me. :)

Rules are easy, just post 10 things that recently made you happy! Tag 10 people to post this meme on their LJs.

the 'wow this turned out long' cut )

There should've been 'good fic' on that list somewhere. Though maybe that goes without saying by now.

edit: And I forgot to tag people but I've lost track of who Lilly tagged and who's around, so I tag everyone! Which means, do it if you feel like it. :)

Because everyone seems to be doing it )

Rizzo seems okay this morning. No idea what last night's dance of upside-down insanity was all about, unless he was trying to freak me out. Gr.

Really have to focus today. Yes.

edit: David Tennant has far too much fun being a woman. It's disturbingly hilarious. Also, he should say bollocks like that more often, like he's curling his tongue around the letters.

Spoke too soon on Rizzo. He's doing the lying-on-the-floor-not-moving thing now. :( Clinging to David Tennant pretending to be a woman to be happy over.

... maybe that will help me write more. Only, I know I'm bad at stuff like this like those memes I did about two weeks ago now and haven't got round to finishing yet but this is a hundred words apiece and I genuinely will tie myself to the computer and do this. Even if it takes me the rest of February. So.

Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

All my tennis slash is linked in my memories (except for the Halcyon sequel extracts but that 'verse is included too, since I know the timeline well enough to write around requests). If you've been around long enough to remember anything I wrote before tennis, go for it.

I will do this. I'm still writing the other stuff too, slowly, but I'm hoping maybe once I get into writing short, quick pieces, I'll still be in the mood to go onto longer stuff after.

Though now, bed.

edit: Dudes, I wasn't expecting to take so long answering this. ^_^ I have to go finish Creative Writing work but I'll get back to everyone tomorrow morning while I'm yelling at the Andy/Marat match.

edit: Oops, I just read the other meme I did over on [livejournal.com profile] scoobydumblonde's journal and I was supposed to post the answers here. *facepalm* So My answers )

And, ze meme:

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your journal with the answers to the questions.

5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
