And I'm not gonna live my life on one side of an ampersand
And even if I went with you, I'm not the girl you think I am

And I'm not gonna match you, 'cause I'll lose my voice completely
No, I'm just gonna watch you, 'cause I'm not the one that's crazy,
Yeah.

- Amanda Palmer, Ampersand

I love this song.

I wish I hadn't found Priscilla Ahn's 'A Good Day' because it was playing over the scene between Carlton and his ex-wife on Psych. It's such a beautiful song and perfect for warm spring mornings. And every time I listen to it I can't help remembering that scene and Carlton's face, and it's heartbreaking.

(My playlist following it up with Adele's Someone Like You doesn't help either. It's a beautiful sunny morning iTunes! WHY DO YOU HATE IT SO.)

In conclusion: watch Psych! Even if it very occasionally drops the comedy to be deeply emotionally scarring (and oh god, it's all the worse for being unexpected; Im so glad I didn't watch the first four seasons of this show week-by-week because I've might've helplessly flailed myself through a wall or something.)

There is something I am very late to be doing right now and I'm making this post instead of doing it. Er. I should go finish it before [livejournal.com profile] jesse_kips makes me into a Psych-esque murder case).

But uh, I have had work and then a bit of a mental day yesterday, which is why you're getting a three-in-one deal.

My mental day yesterday means that I'm pretty much sorted for Christmas-related things now though, thankfully. A little worried that only one of four internationally-posted things have shown up so far - [livejournal.com profile] scoobydumblonde, [livejournal.com profile] chickybee32 and [livejournal.com profile] dukkehjem, could you let me know whenever anything turns up for you?

And now, back to a music meme.

December 17th: 04. a song that makes you sad

This is kind of self-explantory really. I loved university more and more every year I was there; if I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd travel to see the places I want to see and then I would go back to university (or 'college' if I went to America). And there I'd like to stay forever, even if I know it'd never be the same as Flat 7 at Lancaster Uni, even if they are making it all about the money instead of the knowledge, even if I was surrounded by teenagers when I was fifty. I love being surrounded by people who want to learn, and finding tutors who actually want to teach you. I'd like to go to universities all over the world and be taught in other languages and take degrees in anything.

Well. Maybe not maths.

My parents just got home after a weekend of having the house to myself. We're already arguing after five minutes. Sigh. I do like my parents a lot more when we're not all living in the same place. Or indeed, when we don't see each other at all. If I could move to Australia and be on the other side of the world from them constantly, I'd probably say that we got on quite well.

Now I'm going back to watch the World Cup Showjumping at Olympia for as long as possible, until the parentals demand the TV. Sigh.

December 16th: 03 - a song that makes you happy

There was only ever really one contender for this. I considered Tim Minchin's Canvas Bags or Bright Eyes' First Day of My Life (that is possibly my favourite music video ever; you must watch it) but, really, no song makes me more inexplicably happy than Boston's 'More Than A Feeling'. You can listen to the whole song here.

BUT. You don't want to watch it on that boring vid. You want to watch it on the Barclays ad where the guy rides the rollercoaster to work, don't you? Yeah, me too:

While looking this song up on Youtube, I also came across this marvellous Nirvana clip that makes it obvious how similar 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is to 'More Than A Feeling' (which I didn't notice and now will never be able to notice anything else. And I like Nirvana; there will be more Nirvana songs in this meme).

And to conclude, have 'More Than A Feeling' done Scrubs style here.

I will actually go and work on the thing I'm meant to be writing now. ...After getting a cup of coffee, since I finished the strawberry tea I made to help myself write about an hour ago now. And I've written...77 words.

December 15th: 02. your least favourite song

I thought about putting the incredibly irritating Go Compare guy for this (it's reached the point where I will actually switch channels/mute the tv to shut him up) but I'm not sure he even qualifies as a song so much as blatant annoyance tactics to make you remember the stupid website. So, instead have this:

I don't know what it is about this song that winds me up in all the wrong ways. The annoying earworm of a chorus, the whiny tone, I don't know. I just know that I wince every time it comes on the radio. I haven't even watched this Youtube vid to check it's the right one because I don't want to risk getting it stuck on annoying repeat in my head.

There are probably songs I do *hate* more but I don't tend to keep songs that I hate lying around, so thinking of them on the spot is hard. This'll do.

I was going to wait to do this until next month, when [livejournal.com profile] kindoftrouble finished, to save flists from being all song memes but I need something to make me post again and I feel like posting more to enjoy my Christmas LJ layout while I can have it, so. Plus if I wait until January, I'll have forgotten it and never do it anyway. It doesn't really matter if it runs over half a month and half another. Maybe we can create a new month. Decanuary: like February 29th, it only exists once every four years or whenever it's convenient!

Yes. Anyway.

December 14th: 01 - your favorite song

I thought this was going to be terribly hard to pick, then I went on iTunes to see which my most played song was and it was this. Which actually is pretty much as close to a favourite song I could have (years of listening to it later, it's still always on my iPod, I enjoy it every time and still think it's a beautiful song, both music and lyrics).

I originally heard this on a Stargate SG-1 Jack/Daniel fanvid by butterfly (it's a stunning vid, well worth the dl if you haven't seen it). There is a Sarah Fimm-only version which is a little bit more sparse, with a bit more of an edge to it and I like that one too, but not as much as I like the mix version.

In other news, as of today I am the proud owner of a mug with this Softer World strip on, courtesy of http://www.yourdesign.co.uk/ (I agonised for a while over which Softer World to chose and in the end went with this because it always makes me smile and this was only kind of a test-order anyway, to see how it came out). It looks wonderful and I rather want an entire set of Softer World mugs now, only at £8 a mug they are pushing my limit of "worth it", no matter how cool.

That said, they have a Facebook group on which they post discount offers and the P&P is free in the UK. The print quality is superb and the writing is perfectly readable. Suspect I will be ordering more in future, with custom Softer Worlds on especially since the strips are the exact right size to wrap-around.

I feel a proper Andy/Roger Softer World mug is essential in my life. Now just to get the right strip for it.

(They also do custom rhinestone t-shirt designs. I'm not even going to contemplate some sort of tennis slash logo in sparkly rhinestones to wear to Wimbledon next year.

Mostly because it's too tempting.

Also, I think my other idea of I'm rooting for Roger Federer, while hilarious to me personally, may cause some serious double-take damage to all the Australians in the queue.)

They are predicting lots of snow for us from Thursday. Am torn: want snow but desperately need Saturday to finish Xmas shopping, get my hair cut and hopefully see Voyage of the Dawn Treader which I've looked forward to for well over a year now. To do that, I need trains to be running. I also really can't afford to miss more work, although it's not such a big deal whichever train/bus/hot air balloon I catch to get me there as I get paid the same even if I'm just in work for an hour or a day. So...I'd like snow? But not so much that all the trains stop running.

Well, look at that. The meme did make me post after all. Hhhmmm.

What you see when you close your eyes and listen to music:

edit: I should say, found via My Downfall When it Comes to Tempting Book Recs, otherwise known as tor.com. Check out their Saturday Morning Cartoon Index.

edit: Just worked out what it reminds me of; one of my favourite books is Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones. At one point the heroine, Polly, is listening to a quartet playing together and thinks 'If you could hear lime juice, it would sound like violins.' This.

Have discovered Paula Cole. Bought the CD for Where Have All the Cowboys Gone and discovered the Dawson's Creek theme song, which I always loved even though I never really watched the show, is on there too. I love it.

I'm so glad it's the weekend. I promise to catch up on everything sometime in the next day or so.

I kind of want to make a Roger soundtrack, only it doesn't know whether it wants to be a Roger soundtrack or a fic soundtrack yet but it's been stewing at the back of my mind for a while and it's about time it decided. Although I do have the pretty much complete Andy/Roger one just waiting for final tweaks and fic in the liner notes, since that was the whole point of it in the first place.

I'm off to finally finish transferring all my old fic onto my fic journal over here at InsaneJournal now, so no, it's not a sudden flood of new stuff. Though I wish the internet worked on my desktop, because my laptop's been on for half an hour and already the fan is running full blast to stop it overheating. Goddammit I wish my stupid brother hadn't just abandoned us to our utterly crappy internet that doesn't work on half the computers in the house. And also, I really need a new laptop. I was thinking the end of the summer but I don't know if I can wait that long. I suppose it's all the same if I spend the money then or now. Ack. Though, this one has lasted four years without any major breakdowns and that's pretty amazing.

Maybe I'll call my brother later and ask him what good laptops he can get me discount on right now, just to compare them to what I liked on the Dell website. And no, I do not need to spend more just to get a pretty pattern on the lid dammit. I really don't.

Does anyone have Garbage's 'Butterfly Collector' they could upload for me? I had it, I know I did but it seems to have vanished from the computer. I need to listen to it to get it out of my head.

Okay, so every time that I hear a song and go "Hey, that's pretty good" lately, I go to play.com or amazon or Wikipedia and are met with two words: Christian Rock.

And it's like, seriously. Least religious person in the world here yet the last three, I think, bands I've gone to check out with the idea of maybe buying something have been Christian rock bands.

...I'm taking bets on who thinks the universe is taking the piss. Again. Or maybe they just make good songs, I don't know. It'd at least save me the fun of listening to Alanis Morisette in the kitchen with naive and sheltered religious-fresher walking in on the lyrics "would she go down on you in a theatre".

No matter how entertaining that may be.

Fanmix yay!

So I finally got around to finishing that Andy/Roger fanmix I started weeks ago. And only the first song and the sixth are the same. Figures.

So. Fanmix! :) Sorry some of the songs are .wma instead of .mp3. :-/ Hope it's not a problem for people. It's based around the relationship beginning and... well, hopefully it'll speak for itself. I think there's a fic in it, somewhere. One day.

EDIT: Ah-hah, spotted the first cock-up. I made a last minute switch of 08. and 10. but forgot to switch it in the zip files. I r smrt. So Painted on my Heart should be 10 and Going Down in Flames 08.

Stay tuned for the next mistake I find.

No one would happen to have Frou Frou's It's Good to be in Love would they? It just came on Pandora and yeah, every song I hear reminds me that I need to look up more songs by them. I also want their Let Go off the Garden State soundtrack but then, I pretty much want that entire soundtrack. Why can't every film have a soundtrack that damn good?

I really have to start returning th favour of all these songs sometime. Mmmmmm. Not that I have the hugest collection in the world but there must be something of interest. Uploading songs tomorrow then. Another excellent time waster, given that tonight has been spent productively, among other things, by trying to pronounce the longest place name in Wales. I officially fail at being Welsh because I get halfway through and find my tongue's tied itself in a knot.

Bored of being awake, too bored to go to sleep. Think I need to start doing work sometime, anytime. Soon at least.
