But uh, I have had work and then a bit of a mental day yesterday, which is why you're getting a three-in-one deal.

My mental day yesterday means that I'm pretty much sorted for Christmas-related things now though, thankfully. A little worried that only one of four internationally-posted things have shown up so far - [livejournal.com profile] scoobydumblonde, [livejournal.com profile] chickybee32 and [livejournal.com profile] dukkehjem, could you let me know whenever anything turns up for you?

And now, back to a music meme.

December 17th: 04. a song that makes you sad

This is kind of self-explantory really. I loved university more and more every year I was there; if I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd travel to see the places I want to see and then I would go back to university (or 'college' if I went to America). And there I'd like to stay forever, even if I know it'd never be the same as Flat 7 at Lancaster Uni, even if they are making it all about the money instead of the knowledge, even if I was surrounded by teenagers when I was fifty. I love being surrounded by people who want to learn, and finding tutors who actually want to teach you. I'd like to go to universities all over the world and be taught in other languages and take degrees in anything.

Well. Maybe not maths.

December 18th: a song that reminds you of someone

I think this probably would've been Scott Edgar and the Universe - Perfect Comic Book Store which reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] kindoftrouble with her love of comics and limited editions, except she used it for on of hers so I'm having a rethink. Hmm. Oh, I know!

Barenaked Ladies - Call and Answer (that's a Youtube link but the video has embedding diasbled).

In high school, I wrote an epically long, epically ridiculous self-insert series of fics for me and my friends (when I say epically long, the first one was 27,000+ words, the second I think around 50,000+, the third 87,000 words, the fourth a perfectly respectable 69,000+ words and the unfinished fifth 45,000 words. I was writing this for years). I made a soundtrack for the series, complete with inlay booklet including pictures and comments from various friends who 'starred' in it, made enough copies for everyone and handed them out.

This song was, I think, the seventh song on it and the next day, my high-school best friend came into class saying she'd been listening to it on repeat and did I have the Barenaked Ladies album and could I copy it for her? It was always the other way around music-wise; she'd find new music or new bands and get me into - some - of them, so it was really nice to feel like I had something to offer for once. Even though we fell out and haven't spoken in years, this song still reminds me of her.

For reasons I will not go into, it also reminds me of Jareth the Goblin King. No, really.

December 19th - 06. a song that reminds you of somewhere

There's no question - or really, any surprise - in this one: this song reminds me, and always will, of New Zealand. It was on my iPod the entire month I was there and, in some odd act of appropriate serendipity, it was the first song that played when I turned my iPod on on the flight leaving Christchurch (which was in fact heading west, to Melbourne!) I miss New Zealand terribly every time I hear it but it reminds me how amazing it was, and how I'm definitely going back someday too.

~

My parents just got home after a weekend of having the house to myself. We're already arguing after five minutes. Sigh. I do like my parents a lot more when we're not all living in the same place. Or indeed, when we don't see each other at all. If I could move to Australia and be on the other side of the world from them constantly, I'd probably say that we got on quite well.

Now I'm going back to watch the World Cup Showjumping at Olympia for as long as possible, until the parentals demand the TV. Sigh.
