I've spent today on and off, trawling Google for good Daniel/Jack recs which, to be honest, didn't take me much past the second page because it's a pairing with a longer history than some, maybe most. No idea what set me off on SG-1 again because it's been nothing but Atlantis repeats on TV for forever but a whim or randomly sparking neurons or something kept me at it all day, through some great post-apocalypse Sam/Daniel/Jack and a few old favourites like Shalott's beautiful Reveille until, just now, I hit this:
The Cost of a Used Spaceship by Marie Blackpool. Oddly gen Jack/Daniel, Daniel's pov through a talk with the replica!Jack from so many seasons ago I'd almost forgotten them. It's a subtle, quiet fic that eases you on through Daniel's thoughts until you're realising right about the time he does that you're left grieving for someone who isn't even dead; one of the things I love most about AU and parallel worlds is the deaths of familiar-but-AU characters and how can you grieve for someone you saw die when they, your version, is still standing right next to you? And it's one of the rare fics out there that does just enough to leave you hopeful rather than confident but still happy it ended there because another word would've been one too much.
And I cried. Would've done even if I didn't miss this pairing more than I care to admit often and any day now I'm going to remember how much I still love this show when I have the spare cash lying around to start buying it on DVD.

Now for a cheap 'n cheerful meme, since
lillyv tagged me. :)
Rules are easy, just post 10 things that recently made you happy! Tag 10 people to post this meme on their LJs.
1. Autumn. It's crept in all subtly around the edges, until suddenly the trees are half red-gold and I'm wearing long sleeves around the house. It's my favourite season of the year and the run-up to all my favourite things, my birthday, Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas - it officially starts now.
2. Hand-in-hand with autumn comes good TV again; so far we've got Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, Robin Hood, Top Gear, Have I Got News For You, QI and Long Way Down starts on the 28th. Things to mark my week by make me happy and good, shiny inspiration - inspiration to do anything, not just write - makes me even happier.
3. The 'rents just ordered a new 40 inch TV. Which'll be here and set up in time for my birthday Sleepover/DVD night/sort-of-party thing. Yay!
4. Realising today that I'm holding one-sided conversations with Barnabas, just like I used to do with the Muppets, and how much more cheerful it makes my room feel when I have something alive to babble aimlessly to.
5. Less than a month until my London trip and getting to see
kindoftrouble again for the first time in almost a year! Considering we're barely a three hour train ride apart, that's way too long.
6. Finding my Halloween tinsel from last year while clearing out my wardrobe. Simply adding tinsel decorated with bright orange pumpkins makes my room feel more like home. Don't know what that says about me.
7. Stardust being awesome. It was The Movie I was looking forward to this autumn and it makes the ruin that looks to be The Dark is Rising and wanting to stab my eyes out everytime I see a poster with The Golden Compass on it, worth it. (IT'S NOT A COMPASS AND IT'S NOT MADE OF GOLD. FOR GODSSAKE. No wait, happy. Moving on.)
8. Last week's trip to Cardiff. For all that I was, and still am, frustrated with my brother for moving to the arse end of nowheresville-not-Cardiff, just being in Cardiff for any reason (especially when I get to wander around shopping alone) is enough to make me happy. That and my brother telling me someone he works with had to leave work early the other day because John Barrowman was coming to view his for-sale house. Cardiff. I love it.
9. All the new Nightmare Before Christmas stuff in The Disney Store! I drooled my way over everything when I was in Cardiff. It's like everything I could ever want. They even have the plushy Jack and Sally dolls I wanted months ago. And the mugs, god. I could spend my life happily collecting NBC mugs.
10. Casper. I just went out my room and he was sleeping in the hall, on his back with his paws up over his face so he could pretend not to be grinning at me from under them. Then I scratched his fluffy belly and, instead of biting my hand off like usual, he lay there for a good five minutes, curling and flexing his paws in bliss. I love my cat. I really do.
There should've been 'good fic' on that list somewhere. Though maybe that goes without saying by now.
edit: And I forgot to tag people but I've lost track of who Lilly tagged and who's around, so I tag everyone! Which means, do it if you feel like it. :)
