Alright, I don't get it. Why do the Americans selling things on the UK Amazon Marketplace always* have utterly ridiculous prices on their books? Take for example this random book from my childhood. I can order it from an American for £58+ and wait one/two weeks for it -- or I can pay less than £7 including p&p to get a *signed first edition* (assuming she's genuine) from the author herself. And this is not an isolated case; inevitably, every time I'm book-hunting, I'll have the option of buying something from various sellers for around £1 or from an American for around £100.
I don't get it. Is it all some giant conspiracy? Would anyone actually pay that much for a book when it's available drastically cheaper for the same amount of effort? Or am I missing something really obvious here? :-/
* Okay, not always. Some of them are very sensible. There's just that few that baffle me, every time I look at them. O_O

Date: 2006-10-26 05:58 am (UTC)if i owed myself money, i'd say to myself, "self, i've borrowed about $5 trillion from you and frankly, i don't think i'll ever get round to paying that back." and of course, being the kind and giving person i am, i'd say "well, you make a good point, me, $5 trillion is an awful lot. let's just forget about the whole thing and go get some coffee? by the way, since when you you have an english accent?" and i'd laugh and reply "only when explaining things to british people of course! don't be such a chav!"
anyways, extremely long internal dialogue aside, we're not very smart people, us americans.
but some of us are trying quite hard to be smartly european about things. :)
