How did I forget how good Batman Begins is? Wow. I've even left the credits rolling just to hear the music, which is wonderful. Christian Bale may act like a plank of wood but hell, Batman is like a plank of wood a lot of the time, so it works and even whatshername from Dawson's Creek doesn't annoy me. Also, on-going love affair with Liam Neeson's voice. Mmmmmm. Vocal sex. My firm belief in Batman's superiority as a superhero remains untarnished and the 2008-sequel cannot come fast enough... though, oh lord, I'll be twenty two. Can a twenty two year old squee over superhero movies? Are we allowed?
Guess we'll find out in 2008. ;)
However watching it -- and seeing two guys playing at being Batman and Robin (more the camp TV-show versions than gothic Christian Bale style) on the Hamster's show last week -- has made me wonder why we don't actually have superheroes. I mean okay, Superman's an alien in spandex and Spiderman is a genetic freak and Wonder Woman, well, don't even get me started on her but *Batman*, Batman's just a guy with a lot of money. All the things he does, within reason, seem genuinely possible if someone with enough money came along and wanted to do it. Why's no bored billionaire -- and lets face it, there must be some out there right? -- ever dressed up in a cool outfit and gone to fight crime? I suppose it's because we don't have a Gotham as such, with a Joker and a Penguin and a Scarecrow running around concocting fiendishly diabolical plans but you think if we did, we'd have superheroes? Spiderman's set in New York (He is right? Did I imagine that?) and Superman in Metropolis which isn't exactly all that different from any other modern city and they have superheroes. I guess the question is do supervillains breed superheroes or vice versa?
Hmmmm. I should think of a way to work on that for my dissertation.
Despite my complete lack of being useful today, it's been a good day. I stopped by the porter's on an emergency trip to the shop (deodorant, I *knew* I'd forgotten something) this morning to see if he was there to give me my post and he actually was, so I got
kindoftrouble's envelope. A minute later thought "Huh, wasn't
scoobydumblonde's meant to be there too?" and stopped again on my way back to check and it was, they just hadn't written it down. Sigh. Got it though and spent the afternoon watching Hamster almost-drown and opening post. :) Though
simplydelovely, the mental image of Andy Murray in a French Maid's Outfit WILL NOT GET OUT MY HEAD. ;D It's going to be *months* before I can watch him play without giggling again, oh dear. The tennis tour should be glad we don't run it. PLayers' dignity would probably not be foremost in our diabolical plans organisation. ;) Post really made my day though, so thank you everyone. *snuggles for everyone*
I'm thinking early night and getting up early tomorrow will make me accomplish more. I need to spend all day tomorrow watching Ghost in the Shell: SAC for a review and given that there's close to eleven hours of it? You may get some interesting posts tomorrow. 've missed anime though (Toonami, which used to be a good Sky channel with things like Justice League, X-men Evolution and such on it? Now shows endless Pokemon and Transformers or something of the sort. Where's all the *good* TV going?) Must remember to get Spirited Away on DVD next time I get some money. Irritating that I went shopping for on-sale DVDs twice the other week and never so much as *thought* to look for it. I need to write these things down, argh.
In news of woe, Lancaster internet refuses to work with Firefox. :( I haven't had the energy to beat it into submission yet but it's on the 'to-do' list. I really must *not* waste this week like I've wasted the rest of the holidays and last term. Think *useful*.

Date: 2006-01-09 01:18 am (UTC)Er, a decisive yes from me. I don't see me ever not squeeing over superhero movies, or movies in general. Things should be squeed over!
I'm glad it got there :D Hamster almost drowning is adorable. He needs love. I was sad they didn't show him in sub zero temperatures. Stupid Sky for misleading us... again.
Toonami did used to be a good channel, as did FoxKids (which is now called... Jetix?). I miss the X-Men cartoons on tv, especially the 90s series which you can't buy on DVD apart from a few episodes.

Date: 2006-01-09 01:49 am (UTC)'You're never too old to squee' or something like that right? ;) That's good, 'cause squee is *fun*. Some things demand it.
Yep, here intact. :D Hamster being afraid of drowning was beyond adorable, I really wanted to hug him for most of it. He's even cuter when Top Gear's trying to kill him. If I hadn't seen a brief clip of this sub-zero thing in the "what's coming up" montage in the last series's first episode, I'd be thinking it was a myth by now. You think they'll save it to the very last 'best of', to make people keep watching? I can't work out why they haven't shown it yet though; they could've fit it in the last episode of the series, if Jeremy had cut his
gratuitous trip to Californiagame vs race track vid down a bit. They keep taunting us with it. Maybe we should write into the Five o'Clock show to complain about misleading program summaries and cite it as an example. ;-)I've lost track of all the names changes (Jetix? Whhere'd they get *that* from, a bowl of alphabet spaghetti?!) The 90s series was *good*, so much better than the terrible kids shows now. I asked my six year old cousin if she'd heard of Batman or Spiderman a while back and she hadn't. It's terrible. *sighs*

Date: 2006-01-09 02:01 am (UTC)Yes, indeed. You are never to old to squee. Lots of things demand it.
I love them trying to kill him, he's just so cute with it all :D Ha, probably, yeah. Everyone will tune in every time to see it for the love of Hamster. Bwahaha, oh we so have to do that. *composes email* I'll get back to you ;) This is now at the top of our writing to things list.
No clue, it's just a stupid name. The 90s series was awesome. :-0 It's Spider-man! Not Spiderman. One of my friends (lj user="spidermansays") made an icon.

Date: 2006-01-09 02:14 am (UTC)Yep, Hamster and tennis and superheroes and... the whole list could take a while.
It's partly that he just goes with it and does all these insane things, even when he's scared that makes it so cute. :D He's so accepting of it all, poor Hamster. Everyone loves Hamster! How can they not? (except my dad who's taken to calling him the 'Poison Dwarf' to wind me up, though I have *no* idea where he got the Poison part from). Oh if he reads that out, I may die of glee. :D I'll send one too tomorrow. It's kinda awful in a way, having such an easy way of writing to Hamster. It's so *tempting*. *giggles*
Crikey, it is Spider-man. I'm a bad superhero fan. :) Makes sense. Though huh, I wonder why it's not Bat-man by that logic? Hhhhmm. Odd.

Date: 2006-01-09 02:25 am (UTC)Yeah, long list. *squees*
I know, he's so cute for doing it all even when he's scared. Hamster is always willing to go that extra mile for entertainment value. I don't think he gets much choice, really. Poor Hamster. My mum doesn't see the appeal of Hamster and I was shocked! Even my dad likes him. Sane people like Hamster. (That's... odd. Poison? I have no idea where that came from!) But just think he hilarious it would be if he read them out! So, so tempting. (Which reminds me, the episode of Top Gear where they try to sell the set to get money? It's hilarious when Jeremy reads out the letter to Hamster from Stuart.)
Well, Spider-man is Marvel and Superman and Batman are both DC. Which is the only reason I can think of. Though I think it's a good one.

Date: 2006-01-09 01:30 am (UTC)When I was 22 I was squeeing over tennis players, Pirates - ok, Johnny Depp and Orlando in general, how hot the twins are, HBP, how damned slashy those PCW boys can be....
Currently, I'm a 24 yr old mummy to be and trust me when I say that squeeing doesn't wait for permission. I watched GOF while folding and counting up baby clothes , squealing over the twins, wondering why Viktor's kinda hot and giggling because the baby kicked nearly every fucking time Viktor came on screen.
Trust me when I say that squeeing is no respecter of age.

Oh your baby is going to be awesome because hey, reacting to (very hot) Viktor before s/he's even born? *Good* taste. :D Though you do know by the time s/he's old enough to use the internet, all you'll get is "Oh fod godssake mum, no one uses words like 'squee' anymore, honestly. you're so old-fashioned. *eye roll*" ;)
But yay! I never have to grow out of squeeing! *dances*

Date: 2006-01-09 02:17 am (UTC)I can see it now, in 15 years time:
Me: *wanders past the munchkin* :Wotcha writing kiddo?
Kid: Ummm.... welll.... it's called fanfic....
Me: *sits on bed* AWESOME! What fandom? What's your OTP?
Kid: *wtf look on face* Ummm... (insert movie here)... as for the pairing... wellll.....
Me: *understanding* Oh it's not a canon pairing is it? Don't worry, I've found that often the most popular and funnest are the fanon pairings.
Kid: (thinking "How the hell does she know this stuff?") Well it's not that it's not a canon pairing.... it's just... well.... it *embarassed* It's kind've about two guys....
Me: OMG MY BABY GIRL IS A SLASHER!!!! Oh sweetie, I'm so proud of you! Just remember - anal sex without lubricant of some kind will HURT. And in an emergency, nearly anything slick will double as lube. Soap, lard from a kitchen.... if you get stuck, don't hesitate to come and ask me for help okay? I don't want you ending up on fanficrants.
Kid: Oh Mum, fanficrants got shut down about 3 years ago. How do you know this stuff anyways?
Me:*deer caught in headlights* Ummm..... gtg, I need to get dinner started. *runs*
Kid: OMGWTFBBQ eleventy one?
OMG PIRATES2 PREVIEW??? WHERE????

Date: 2006-01-09 02:32 am (UTC)You've haven't seen it yet?!! You can see a small version here or on the official site (though it seems to take much longer to load) here. It totally focuses on Jack, they know what made the last one a success. ^_^

Date: 2006-01-09 06:17 pm (UTC)Uhm, that would be yes. I do. And hell, I'm... way older. ;-) Having just realized I'll be turning twenty-nine this year? Frightens me, especially when it seems the majority of my f-list is so much younger than me. *sighs*
Also, Gotham and Metropolis are both supposed to be rip-offs of NYC. And I think Spiderman is in NYC. *ponders*

Date: 2006-01-09 07:57 pm (UTC)I'm 24 so don't feel bad squeeing over comic book movies. I'll be twenty six when the sequel comes out. It's seems like I'm aging backwards sometimes actually :).
