Rita wind speed down to 120 mph"

So it's still dropping. Down another 10 mph and it'll be a category 2. Wishful think *really* hard. Apparently it's also possible that Houson and Galveston might escape the worst of a direct hit, which is making me relieved for [livejournal.com profile] astonish and the people [livejournal.com profile] mina_pak said were staying behind. Though it's also making me feel terrible for wishing it to move further away from them, because then it's going to go over more people, the only difference being I don't know them. It's a lose-lose situation. *sighs* In an ideal world, it'd just fizzle out before reaching land. Why has no one found a way to diffuse weather systems yet? It's all pressure and temperature and... science things that as an English student I don't understand right? So there's got to be something they could do. We can travel faster than sound but not pull apart a single weather system.

In related news, if one more article on this mentions oil prices to me, I'm going to seriously smite some journalists. People in the way of a *hurricane*. I really couldn't give a damn if you have to pay a little more to fill your goddamn car.

edit: Going to get a little sleep. Today, I have been terrible. Actually yesterday. I think the only thing of any use I accomplished was doing the washing up, after days of putting it off.

So tomorrow I will do stuff. Lots of stuff. I *will* or there will be *consequences*.

Night.

Yeah, I'm finding a lot of very ominous references to what the storm surge could do. Only good thing my news keeps throwing at me though is that at least it'll drain away by itself, unlike in it did New Orleans. And it's a relief to know they won't be hit with the worst of it. I hate sitting here and not being able to help. Especially when I have an empty house that I could've quite easily filled with people if there wasn't a stupid thing called an ocean in the way.

See, now the people side of it I get, that I'd like to hear about. But literally *all* my news has talked about is oil prices and how it's affecting "us over here in the UK" and how much it's costing you to fill your car at different stations. I feel like throwing something at the TV.

Thank god for the internet and first-hand blogger accounts from the places affected. They're keeping me sane in a sea of self-centered media.

I don't think you need to worry about me much anymore. The weather outside? Beautiful. Perhaps a little windy, but it wouldn't have even blown over the lawn furniture if we had left it out. :) It'll probably get a little worse tomorrow (like it might actually rain) but I'm generally thinking the coast is clear.

Hey, they should just be thankful you guys have gas. There isn't any here. Occasionally on the news, they'll talk about one station that has a little left, but it's usually gone within an hour after they announce it.

That's very good to hear. :D I really didn't want you getting smushed.

... I hadn't even thought about that. All this whining from the BBC and at least they *had* the gas to get them to work to whine in the first place.
