Ficcers who are British/American and write fic set in America/Britain, then declare mistakes with the Americanisms and Britishisms "should just be expected" because they aren't native? Because they don't have any beta readers in those countries? GROW THE HELL UP AND STOP WHINING. I've begged people to tell me what Americans call underpants and tarmac, I've researched for hours on the tiniest little things, I've actually put the effort in and when, inevitably, I still get things wrong because I'm not American, then I expect that people would point it out to me and I'd know not to do it again. If I didn't have American beta-readers and I needed them, I'd go and find someone. There are *communities* for this sort of thing, places where people not British can learn that Hogwarts doesn't have sophomores or proms and where people not American can learn that if you ask for a rubber instead of an eraser in class, then everyone will laugh at you. Put some goddamn effort into it! Argh.
Nice to usher in the new year with a rant eh? ;)
I'm sorry, that is a truly terrible way to start the new year. Happy new year to everyone who's already past midnight. :)
