clo_againJust had a minute of sheer panic when checking how much train tickets down for Wimbledon will cost me because all the variations of days/places I could go from I was checking find were costing me at least £48. Which is just batshit; London never costs me that much and I've got down there for under £20 on several occasions.
Then, staring blankly at a Monday's ridiculous circuitous trains, it dawned on me - I was checking May as an example because thetrainline only stretches three months ahead so I can't buy for June yet. And you know what there is in May?
Bank fricking Holiday weekends.
I checked the non-Bank Holiday weekends and I can get a single either way for £16.50, so (assuming the prices are similar for June) with booking fee I'll do the whole thing for around £27, which is about what I was expecting. And I've got some money on my Oyster card (not enough but some) so hopefully Wimbledon won't push me too far down into the depths of my overdraft after Oz.
Goddamn Bank-bloody-Holidays. Quit scaring the crap out of me.
On a more successful travel note, I've realised planning to get back to Melbourne from Brisbane after NZ and then flying to Alice Springs and back from there is... spectacularly thick. I can just fly to Alice Springs from Brisbane and then from there to Melbourne a few days later and it not only saves me about three days of travel but it costs the same as the bus fare would too. Why I just didn't think of that a week ago instead of trying to plan around it... sigh. Also, have found the bus ticket I need to get me from Melbourne to Brisbane with stops in Canberra and Sydney along the way and, aside from Melbourne being a lot further from Canberra than I thought (the overnight bus trip takes like ten hours, wtf) it's all good. Now I just need to sit down with my Post-it chart of doom to finalise dates and I can book all that and some hostels, and let everyone know when I'll be turning up on your doorsteps going "HAI! I AM HERE FROM THAT THAR RAINY ISLAND PLACE. PLZ LET ME STEAL YOUR CAFFEINE AND FLAIL OVER YOU." ;-)
(I probably won't do that. At least not in public places where people will boggle.
...At least not very much.)
