So, it's Matt Smith. For me this is- a little out of left field (I know I pegged him in my last post but only after they listed him amongst the candidates and said the Doctor was going to be younger). I was hoping for Paterson Joseph (Marquis de Carabas ftw!) but even my list of Top Five Options was all middle aged guys. We were discussing along the lines of Chris Barrie and fellow Red Dwarfers, Bill Nighy, James Nesbitt. The media even suggsted Hamster, who's closer to 40 than 30 these days. If you'd said twenty six year old, I suspect I would've laughed at you.
But. I liked him in Ruby in the Smoke. I hated Smoke in the North or whatever it was called but remember him being one of the things I actually liked. My parents saw him in Party Animals and loved him, so they're happy.
I don't know. I think the age was a shock but after an hour sat here watching Hamster present Total Wipeout, I think I'm remembering I do this every time with 'Who casting decisions (except Tennant who I still love in all his glorious insanity) and then I watch it and think right, so they actually did do a good thing. Mostly. There are a few exceptions. But they've cast Ecclescakes and Tennant who've both been fantastic and I shouldn't write someone off for age. It could be really interesting. And it could've been worse; they could've cast someone I don't like, as opposed to someone I have no idea about.
If nothing else, this is going to be really interesting. Seriously. If they give him an older companion (not that I think that's likely but...), I'd imagine there'd be some fights over who has the authority at first. And it'll be fascinating to see someone that young do the seriousness of 900+ years old.
That is of course, if he can do it. But I think he can. I hope he can. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
