"Disney Sets Sail for Pirates of the Caribbean Sequel! Source: The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday, July 16, 2003
With Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean doing extremely well at the box office, the studio is already talking of setting sail on a sequel to the feature.
In anticipation of the film's success, Disney had made sequel arrangements with such key cast members as Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, as well as with the behind-the-scenes duo of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski.
The studio has also begun talks with "Pirates" writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio about drafting a sequel, though no specific story line has yet been set."
My adoration of this movie is fighting with my hatred of Hollywood sequels. Don't get me wrong; for me this movie is on par with Lord of the Rings. But unlike LotR, this works well as *one* movie. And Hollywood is notorious for screwing up a good thing. I don't know whether to root for another episode of Captain Jack Sparrow or pray for the entire sequel idea never to come to pass so I can bask in the joy of the original, knowing it survived Hollywood unscathed. The world conspires to make me make difficult decisions tonight, but I think I've got to lean towards a 'leave it alone' attitude. Don't mess with a good thing. And if they do.... well just please don't let them screw it up. Please. But look, if the same director and stuff came back.... there is hope. Right?
Sequels. The spawn of evil. Well, mostly, the occasional sequel rocks. *crosses fingers that this will be one of those times*
