Was it just me or was that a surprisingly depressing Christmas 'Who? Killing Kylie was... unexpected. And rather unnecessary, really. They made all that fuss about the EMP and then abandoned it; there was never an explanation given (was there?) for why the screwdriver didn't work on the Hosts; SHE COULD'VE JUMPED OUT THE FRICKIN' FORKLIFT (side note: futuristic, nuclear powered spaceship and it still stocks the common forklift?). It was good, mostly (the parts not in the 'mostly' include the Queen waving because they won't got there, really they wouldn't, oh they are please no, they *did*, have died of cheese-overdose, and the whole flying-angel-doctor-thing. Just no. Even with the ridiculous aspect excused because it's Christmas and a certain amount of eye-rolling moments are to be expected, it had the feel of "we're out of time and we need to get the Doctor to the bridge! Oh noes!" The whole end felt a little tacked on; I was half-expecting a 'to be continued'.)
That said, I'm glad they didn't take the sucker option of having her be 'saved by teleport'. Once they killed her, they stuck to it and in an ordinary episode I would've given them major kudos for that. It was just- it's Christmas and it was a little harsh. There were moments there when it was Deathly Hallows all over again; arbitrary characters were dropping like flies.
I don't know. I enjoyed it but I can't decide if it was just the euphoria of the Who-deprivation finally breaking. Last year was sillier but somehow more satisfying as a Christmas episode. This was maybe a better episode but not as good a Christmas special.
Have to say, I'm looking forward to Catherine Tate now, simply because I want a goddamn companion who isn't in love with the Doctor. It's getting really tedious now. Says the girl who loves David Tennant but still. Not everyone he meets will be a fangirl; he's probably got at least a forty-sixty chance of meeting one of the female population who thinks he looks like a weasel. (Sorry Tennant, they do exist. I still love you.) There was rather too much of the Oood in the preview trailer for my liking - surely there's only so much you can do with them? - but I'm still all excited. Yay for new 'Who in a few months!
Speaking of trailers, the 'coming soon' Torchwood trailer looked awesome. I keep forgetting that James Marsters is going to be in it; I read it or see a trailer and have an "OMG I FORGOT THAT IT WILL BE SO AWESOME" and then promptly forget again. But it does look awesome. We can only hope he brings some of the Buffy/Angel goodness with him so the second series is good, or at least sucks a little less. If it's even half as good as that trailer made it look though, it'll be fan-bloody-tastic.
Alas for Christmas being over for another year. Still, it's been fun.
