Is-- is Watership Down really an updating of The Aeneid? I mean--

Really?

Wow that's depressing.

Also if any sci-fi nuts are around, I need some examples of strong female heroes other than Anne McCaffrey's within sci-fi. And would you say sci-fi has been generally more accepting of the strong female hero than the heroic/sword&sorcery type fantasy? Or have I just pulled that out my ass?

Hi, this is me paaaaaaaaaaanniiicccckkking.

edit: Would just like to point out current overall word count stands at 8,164. Which it terrible, given that I'm not even halfway through my third section yet and have another section of 2,000 words and a conclusion to write. Oh dear god, why did I leave this until the last minute? Why?

edit: Hi, so bored and referencing The Crystal Singer has made me want to read it again, although the internets has conditioned me into believing Anne McCaffrey is the devil. Which doesn't stop me wanting to buy the book. Mm.

My Spaced has been dispatched, yay! Also, current overall word count: 8,676. In theory this should mean I only have 1,324 words left of my dissertation. In practice I have more like 2,500. Also, I still think I am talking crap. :-/

edit: It's oddly terrifying to be analysing an author's novel while listening to them doing an interview. Especially when it's Neil Gaiman, who sounds lovely.

8,816 words. Third section not finished. Argh.

edit: Would just like to point out: current overall word count 9,047 words. And the third section still isn't finished. Mainly because I can't decide anything for definite about Laura in American Gods. She's a very confusing character from a feminine-in-fantasy perspective.

Random drive by commenting! (Hi by the way)
Strong female heroes in sci-fi: the one that immediately comes to mind is David Weber's Honor Harrington series (although, you know, that could count as military space opera really >>)
Can't think of any others at the moment, unless secondary characters are fair game.

I am of the opinion that both sci fi and fantasy are pro-badass female heroine, but that the fantasy genre is a bit more limited maybe in the type of female heroes portrayed. But that would be me pulling things out of my ass.

(*waves back* Hi! :D)

I haven't come across that. *intrigued because military space opera sounds awesome* I was mainly going for leading characters, though I suspect secondary characters are going to get referenced sometime soon too so anything is good.

That is excellent good sense and gives me my lead-in to the next paragraph. *offers you cookies of gratitude*

I remember reading a summary of some of Elizabeth Moon's stuff which I think had a leading female character, but given I could never find the first book I never got around to reading it D: If I recall any others I'll let you know :D

Glad to help! And mmn, cookies!

That rings a bell. Mmm. I didn't read any either but I think I picked it up once. This dissertation is teaching me that I really haven't read enough fantasy books. Thank you! :)

Well, if you are looking for strong female fantasy leads too, my favourite would have to be the "Crown Duel"/"Court Duel" books. I heart them, even if they are aimed at the teen market. And "Sabriel" because that is a classic. Anyway. XD

Cookies help the brain work! There ought to be conclusive studies on that or something.

Unfortunately, the only strong females popping up for me are from McCaffrey's books and fantasy, not sci-fi.

You can buy all 3 Crystal Singer books in one big paperbook. Not that I own it. Or that it's a wreck from all the times I've re-read it.

Yeah, Anne McCaffrey's ones are the ones I know too. It's okay; I've referenced her to prove something about female heroes being aberrations or something I'm totally losing track of what I'm writing *facepalm* so I think it works.

I went and looked it up on play.com. It's taunting me with its temptingness. I'm trying to make myself remember that there are other books I want more. Really. *twitches*

*hugs* Then it's OK, as long as you don't go in-depth into her characterisations, you're fine :p If you have the space, which I guess you don't, you could mention that why female leads are still rare, strong female supporting characters are getting more common.

There will always be books we want :( Right now I'm wading through some Gemmell books because someone told me I should. I didn't need a new addiction you know ;)
