clo_again: (Doctor Who - Rose)

Having spent way too long this morning watching Farscape vids on youtube (yes I have a dissertation to write, no I barely did any work today, yes I will hit you with the black ceramic Dalek that was my Easter present if you so much as think of mocking/comforting right now) and just now reading thoughts on last night's Doctor Who, am suddenly amused at the sheer differences in sci-fi. Because you know, John's clone dies and Aeryn promptly goes to Planet Emo and sulks forever; Rose and the Doctor will never see each other again and people are sulking because 'he mentions her too much' (okay, he did mention her a bit too much last night. Sticking to the bed mention would've been plenty, really. Maybe if she'd died, people wouldn't sulk so much. I'm not saying they're wrong to complain, because I agree with them a little and will more and more if it happens all series but I'm just saying. He could've gone to Planet Emo. He could've overdosed on magic and tried to bring about the Apocalypse. He could've started a war to free Scotland-- no wait, Mel Gibson did that already.

Honestly. Your best friend gets stuck in a parallel universe and you'll never see them again. Considering it could've been Planet Emo, I think the odd reference is shiny in comparison. Considering the rest of the shows I watch, only mentioning your never-to-be-seen-again-extremely-close-friend once in a while? Is restrained.

That said, I do like Martha. Hopefully it'll be more 'Doctor&Martha' from next week, instead of 'Doctor&GuestTraveller'.

I think the problem for the old guard (no insult intended to them as I am of them) is that the Doctor doesn't really mention his old companions ever again, or if he does it's a vague throwaway line (like 'ah janis thorns, I had a friend who used them') rather than this emphasis. And while I can cope, because new series = new rules, it's a bit glaring because he never did it before.

I do get that it's unusual; I think they're pushing it a bit myself and I like having the thought of Rose still hanging around. My take on it though is that Rose was the thing he was clinging to after Gallifrey and the Time War, which hasn't really been addressed yet and he's got to have issues about it somewhere in there. I think Rose was and still is his substitute for dealing with his Time War Angst.

Or, at least that's what I'd like it to be. :) I do think they need to have him thinking "Martha" not "Rose" from next week though. Two episodes of references is more than enough.

Good point.

The thing I find funny is that the reference that got everyone up in arms (the one the witch made) was the one that annoyed me the least, because I could understand it. It was the one on the bed that annoyed me.
