clo_againSo, went to see The Taming of the Shrew in Liverpool last night. Naked male bottoms, men in drag and men kissing each other at a dramatic moment? BEST. PLAY. EVER.
Okay, aside from the fact the whole thing was a slashers wet dream, the play itself was actually fantastic. Seriously, the guy playing Kate had I think the entire audience on the edge of their seats time and time again. At one point during the 'taming' scenes, he was sitting on the floor next to the guy playing Petruccio and he turned and sort of very tentatively pressed his face to the guy's leg with a desperate expression, only to *crumple* when it was yanked away which just broke me. He was good beyond words but everyone else was awesome too. It was this mix of Shakespearian language, modern music, Shakespearian music, crazy costumes, some of the *best actors* I've seen *ever*... I was a little shocked to come home and read a few negative reviews for it on the 'net, because I've seen more than a few plays at this point and that had to be one of the best, way up there at the top. So, so impressive.
The same company -- same people, they seem to do every play together -- are touring with ...Shrew and Twelfth Night in repertory next year and I think they're going to be in Manchester over our Easter holiday so I'll be moving heaven and earth to go (did I mention they were good? yeah.) But they're also going to be at the Perth Festival in Oz, Hong Kong, Brooklyn, Milan, Germany... go have a look-see at their website and if they're anywhere near you and you can go, *go*. Because, awesome.
However, a little note to someone who will, unfortunately, never read it:
Dear Unknown,
If you feel the need to say "Ew" when two men kiss at an extremely dramatic moment onstage, then I suggest you get your pathetic, prejudiced, Neanderthal ass out of the theatre and back to the primordial swamp from which you crawled. The three girls in the row in front of you did turn around to glare at *you*, we *were* pissed off and if we'd been able to see who it was in the dark, we would have clearly told you where to shove your 'ew's afterward.
Moron.

Other than that one small interruption, had an awesome night. :) Forgotten how fun it is to see plays, though lingering trauma from GCSE Drama had me mentally cataloguing how the set was moved in case someone decided to make me write an essay on it and that was *complicated* because they had all these crazy wardrobes... ah, fun times. Especially if I get to see them next Easter.
Now. Should really go do some work. Hm.
