Gods, that was fun.
Nov. 19th, 2006 12:22 amI love it when sticking it out and having faith in something pays off. Love it. Nary a moment of daftness -- okay, *less* daftness than usual -- in the entire thing and *such a damn good setup* for future angst toward the end. Even the 'rents who called after grudgingly admitted it was 'enjoyable', after they've been telling me how awful it is for weeks. I think they finally got that some moments are more tongue-in-cheek, like the Sheriff announcing "Watch out, Sheriff coming through!"
I loved Much's face when he thought Robin'd been stabbed at the beginning. I'm sorry, that is pretty much the worse case of canon unrequited love I've seen in-- well, *ever*. I'm getting desperate for them to address it or at least *something* to do with Much. Given that this was Allan's episode and there's pretty much what, only Will, perhaps Djaq and Little John (though, his back story was addressed wasn't it? I think. Maybe) so he's got to get an episode some time. For the love of smeg, *please*. If they don't write one, I might have to to soothe my burning need to hit Robin over the head with his own obliviousness -- any more stunts like that 'oh I've been stabbed!' and Much's nerves might just snap.
Marian having her promise to marry Gisborne hanging over her head? Genius. Possibly the first real stroke of genius they've had all series but oh hell was it worth waiting for. Not that I was particulary impressed with her in this episode, especially in that she barged headfirst into the house after Robin specifically told her not to go home. She didn't even have the brains to scout the house out first; Gisborne had to have had a horse outside somewhere, Robin'd already showed her how to get in through the upstairs window so that was an option or hey, how about glancing through a bloody *window* before diving into a whole load of crap? Stupid girl. You'll have to do better than that.
Though, her telling Gisborne she'd never marry Robin while she knows he's listening outside the window broke me a little. ...Maybe, a lot. He looked so close to tears at one moment that my heart ached. I loved that Marian turning Gisborne's kiss away mirrored her refusing Robin's earlier too, though I can't quite put my finger on the meaning of the symbolism when I'm not awake at *all*. It was pretty mirroring anyway.
Djaq gets more and more likeable as each episode goes by, in addition to filling the sympathetic female position needed for those quieter moments of angst that wouldn't work so realistically guy-to-guy. Love the backstory on how she chose the name Djaq -- honestly, considering she's been around two or so episodes, she's already as developed as the other characters.
Yet another episode with Little John getting the short straw. Right now, he's the bouncer and it's getting old. *Utilise him* for crying out loud; he was in charge before Robin turned up, I doubt he'd acquiese so readily -- and so quietly -- every single time. Give him a damn backbone. And some decent bloody lines!
There was a beautiful bit of editing as the hanged men were revealed, between Allan and the guards pulling the sheets away. Beautiful. Not to mention the guy playing Allan has really gorgeous green eyes that I'd never noticed.
Speaking of eyes, this was the first episode where I really fell for Jonas Armstrong's cute-puppy-eyed look. Maybe because he showed a new, more mature side when he yelled at Allan's brother for breaking into Marian's house so the contrast was stronger with his cute side. Or perhaps I just liked him trying for a kiss when hanging off a building. Whatever the reason, my resolve to call him an idiot every other minute remains intact but there may be more than a hint of affection in it in future. I'm so weak, damn his eyes.
Overall, impressed with this week (can you tell?). Have more thoughts but I'm tired and I'll have to rewatch properly to form them (I actually remembered to hit record this week. Only took me what, six episodes? Go me.)

Feet = cold. Slept in my thick jumper last night and was still a bit chilly but I refuse to turn my radiator on when it ends in me waking up slowly roasting in the middle of the night. Meant to be freezing tonight to, so maybe I should add my thick blanket on top but then I wake up too hot too. I wish the weather would make its damn mind up and be either warm or freezing, not something in between. This has been a bloody weird November weatherwise so far. If I didn't completely believe in global warming before, I do now.

Date: 2006-11-20 11:32 am (UTC)We did get some Little John backstory in episode 1 or 2. But I would like more Little John too.
I think that's what annoys me the second most about this series. Fine make Marian fightgirl, I may have issues (many issues) with it, but don't have that mean she loses the brains she has in original canon.
I really shouldn't feel as sorry for Guy of Guisbourne as I do. For me, mostly because my belief is that one of the trademarks of this series is that Marian and Robin exchange bad dialouge, the stroke of genius was the Sheriff hanging Alan's brother early because we are the crowd waiting and expecting Robin to be able to rescue them in time. And yes, Alan does have the most amazing eyes.
