Oct. 30th, 2005 07:34 pmIt must be almost November. People are setting random fireworks off around campus.
Unfortunately, not where I can see them from my window. Bastards.
*wants fireworks*

Date: 2005-10-30 08:44 pm (UTC)Ah well some years ago - maybe a hundred, maybe two or three hundred, I can't remember - a group of guys led by a man called Guy Fawkes decided to blow up our Houses of Parliament. They gathered lots of barrels of gunpowder in one of the cellars but before they set them off on November 5th, they were caught. There became a tradition of burning a stuffed 'Guy' figure on bonfires every November 5th in commemoration, hence the name 'Bonfire Night'. Fireworks got added to it, I guess because the Houses of Parliament would've made pretty explosions if they'd actually been blown up. :) From about the end of October you see people having firework displays, getting more and more until the 5th. Which is why I love November. ^__^

Date: 2005-10-30 10:38 pm (UTC)That makes me think of Italy. When I was there near Naples, they had this festival of lights or something similar going on and people everywhere we're setting off fireworks in the streets. It freaked my roomates and me out when they suddenly started going off without warning by our hotel. :) But it was really awesome because we had a balcony and could sit out there and watch.
