Oct. 23rd, 2005 03:42 pmIn a desperate attempt to help myself do my Victorian seminar work for tomorrow, I put 'Chartist poetry' into Google. The first page of results was - at *least* - half made up of results specific to Lancaster and its lecturers. You know what that says?
It says only Lancaster is dumb enough to be seriously interested in Chartist poetry. And why is it dumb?
Because Chartist poetry is, quite frankly, crap.
I am so close to going to the English department tomorrow and begging on my knees to be allowed to switch to Literature and Film. Victorians have no relevance to *anything* I want to do. I'm analysing crap poetry, which I hate with a passion; I hate most poetry with passion actually. Lit & Film actually relates to *writing*, to modern life, to actual real, tangible, useful things. I don't care that I've spent probably in excess of £80-100 on Victorian books. I'm furious that my dumb English department wouldn't just let me do Lit & Film in the first place and save me all this money, time and boredom.
There should be an option to do English where you don't have to do poetry. I don't think I'll ever quite shake the belief that most poetry is written by people who can't, or can't be bothered, to write something properly.
Unless it's Jabberwocky. Which should be worshipped for the sheer insanity of its beauty.
