Another one of those seemingly crazy questions - what do Americans call 'toilets' - do you refer to them as restrooms or bathrooms or toilets or something else?
Hmmmm, I think any of them would be used... though restroom is generally used more in public than anywhere else... bathroom is for home or public, and toilet is mostly used at home.
Cross culture fic can indeed be a pain in the ass for the writer. :-)
Restrooms or bathrooms... or toilets, but restrooms or bathrooms is more polite, IMO... since the toilet is the actual object some people might consider that TMI :)
Don't know about Texas or Florida though. Everywhere I've been (whole east coast and southwest) it's been the same....
Generally we don't say toilet in public (unless we're in Home Depot's plumbing department.) I was actually shocked by a very helpful usher in a London movie theatre using the word -- of course, he was baffled by my calling it a restroom.... I was young. (Also where I learned that sweet popcorn means sugared, not just unsalted -- it was a very educational visit.)
Restroom or Ladies'/Mens' room in a restaurant, for instance.
We're fairly careless in calling it a bathroom, since many don't have baths, but we do anyway.
a "john" is a complete colloquialism.
An outhouse is a very primitive facility.
The "little (boys') (girls') room" is used as a ludicrous substitute
"Going to see a man about a horse" is a euphemism my grandfather used. I made him explain it. In company. I was six. I couldn't figure out why he'd want a horse -- or maybe I wanted to come too. I can't really remember my motivation. I don't really hear it these days.
I can never know too much when it comes to fic research. :D This is fantastic, thank you so much.

I'm completely torn between giggling and squeeing at the cuteness. ^__^ *giggles* It was so fun being small and able to embarrass people like that. *happy memories*
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! *dances around in between much mad hugging* This moment needed to be screencapped, blurry or not and YAY!! *tears up again over Roger's sad face*
You are a goddess, you really are. :D YAY for screencaps!
*grins* Brothers are just there to do the work for us. Of course we should get the resulting hugs. ;) And yep, if you hadn't hit record then there would be no screencaps, so your was the most important job. :)
Just what I posted last night, Match Over. Isn't the sudden rush of fic fantastic? It feels like the tennis fandom is actually getting up and running. :D *bounces happily*

Date: 2005-02-01 10:55 pm (UTC)It can indeed. At least we can learn some fun stuff along the way though, which sort of makes it worth the trouble. :)

I've run out of possibilities.
Hope this helped.
