Well, it's not long until Happy New Year. I'm following my time honoured tradition of staying in with my computer and the curtains open so I can watch the very pretty fireworks. Sometimes I wonder if I'm even a student at all.

But it's sad - I liked 2004. I did some fun things. So I guess the last few hours of the year are as good a place to look back on it as any.

> I passed my A-levels very well. Yay!
> I didn't spontaeneously combust with stress at any point. Came close a few times though I think.
> I visited two new countries, Holland and Austria - native uprisings caused: 0. Diplomatic incidents caused: 0. Flights that crashed: 0. Foreign words learned: ?
> I can speak more German, Italian and Welsh than I could at the start of the year. Mae'n bendigedig!
> I've found a fandom to settle down in for a while and have actually written more than one fic for it. Yay!
> I've discovered that I like guacamole. After first discovering what guacamole *is*.
> I talked to Merc for the first time on the phone. And sent more letters and presents abroad than in the rest of my life altogether.
> I met more new people that I liked than new people I disliked.
> I'm actually taking a degree course in writing. I have to tell myself that every so often to believe it.
> I realised that I don't need a support group behind me to do things.
> I realised that I like my own company just as much as the company of other people.
> I realised that no matter where I am, I miss having a pet if I don't have one. Which is why if I decide not to go to Canada - because don't want the 'rents to have to look after it when I'm not here -then I'm getting a pet rat next term. Called Grizabella. If that's too expensive then I'll at least get some fish.
> I realised that if it snowed every Christmas, I would never ever need presents again because I'd be happy enough with snow. Which suggests I should move to the Artic perhaps.
> You do not own your obsession. Your obsession owns you.
> Cogito ergo sum.
> I realised that no one can make you unhappy but yourself, but the rest of the world can at times try very hard to prove that wrong.
> Some people you'll always miss and never forget, because they had something special. And often people won't understand why you miss them so much, but it doesn't make it wrong to miss them.

I probably realised other stuff too but I've forgotten it. And the fireworks are stunning so I'm off to watch them for a while. There will at least be some tennis fic posted later, even if no ficlets get done.

I love fireworks. That's something else I realised. ^__^

EDIT:

1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before? Went to university and lived away from home. Went abroad without the 'rents. Wrote more than one fic in one fandom before moving on. I've done tons of new stuff this year.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year? No and probably yes.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? My cousin had a baby girl.

4. Did anyone close to you die? no. *touch wood*

5. What countries did you visit? Holland and Austria.

6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004? More motivation.

7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? I’m terrible at picking dates... Writing my first ever tennis slash on July 4th. August 19th when I found out I’d passed my A-levels. November 11th, speaking to Merc. December 7th sending Christmas cards to three or four different continents. Take your pick.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Getting three As in my A-levels. Surviving my first university term.

9. What was your biggest failure? Not working hard enough in my first university term. Starting something when I should’ve known better in the first place.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Nothing more serious than a cold *TOUCH WOOD*

11. What was the best thing you bought? Oh, um… the blue topaz ring I bought to commemorate leaving college.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Everyone I know who survived the first university term without going crazy, setting things on fire or bursting into tears and giving up. So that’s everyone I know who’s gone to uni then. :)

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? George Bush. Tony Blair. Flatmate of Doom. A couple of other people for petty little things.

14. Where did most of your money go? University. Books. DVDs.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Tennis, living away from home for the first time, snow at Christmas. EDIT: The Olympics! Can't believe I forgot them.

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2004? ‘Last Summer’ – Lostprophets

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? About the same I think, definitely not sadder.
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner, by about half a stone.
iii. richer or poorer? Richer… but it’s a student loan, so it’s not technically my money.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Writing, ficcing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Procrastinating.

20. Did you fall in love in 2004? No.

21. How many one-night stands? *grins* None.

24. What was your favorite TV program? Firefly (I discovered it this year, so that counts)

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Yes the Flatmate of Doom, but I didn’t know her this time last year so does that count?

26. What was the best book you read? Probably Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair… though 1984 was good too.

27. What were your greatest musical discoveries? Keane. Dido.

28. What did you want and get? To get into Lancaster University.

29. What was your favorite film of this year? Tough question. Probably Shrek 2 but get back to me when I’ve seen Edge of Reason, A Series of Unfortunate Events and The Incredibles. Peter Pan was Dec 2003 right?

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I was 19 - Got talked into opening my presents at 2am by excited flatmates and I think I went shopping. We postponed the restaurant meal until the week after.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? I’d have to say… actually beginning the novel that’s bouncing around in my head.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004? Obsessive with co-ordination in the first seven or eight months – clothes, eyeshadow, earrings, nail varnish all had to match – and ‘whatever is there and passably clean’ in the last few months.

33. What kept you sane? Fanfiction. Slash. Merc and April, though ‘sane’ is debatable. ;)

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Johnny Depp in the first six months, Roger Federer or Andy Roddick or Mardy Fish – take your pick – in the last six months. Am very fickle with my affections. ;)

35. What political issue stirred you the most? I was screaming at the TV at 4am when Bush got re-elected but to pick one issue… gay marriage I think.

36. Who did you miss? Casper (my cat). Everyone who I left behind when I went to uni. My college English tutor with all his snarky goodness.

37. Who was the best new person you met? It’s a toss-up between Laura and Rachel and Kayleigh. I love them all. *huggles* I already knew [livejournal.com profile] liroa15 before this year, so technically she doesn’t count or she’d be top of the list.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004: If you put the effort in, you’ll get good results. If you don’t put quite enough effort in but know how to prioritise, you’ll still get good results.

49. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: “I try to stay awake and remember my name, But everybody's changing, And I don't feel the same” - Keane
