Seriously. It made a little more sense than that... but if I told you to go and see this because it's a film with a scintillating and engaging plotline... I'd be lying. If I told you it was a film with some bloody good music but some terrible camerawork, then I'd be telling the truth. I was confused by their choice to use the black and white 'flash-forwards' throughout - the chandelier scene was so stunningly beautiful at the beginning, I felt they ruined it by returning to the black and white scenes again before the end of the movie. The camerawork was also terribly basic - yes so maybe they were trying to make it like watching a musical onstage, but um... MOVIE. MUSICAL. Two entirely different things. Moulin Rouge demonstrated what could be done in terms of camerawork and editing to music and Phantom? Did not measure up to that standard.
However the music itself of course was stunning, and it's worth going to see just for that and Emmy Rossum who sang beautifully throughout. The Phantom was a disappointment, though he could've just been doing his best with a script that did him no favours whatsoever. I honestly think it would've been better to cast someone famous in the part, who would be able to give 'presence' and drama to such a huge role. Antonio Banderas would've got my vote.
But the final shot, of the rose and the ring? Bloody marvellous. It made the terrible, pointless flash-forwards almost worthwhile.
So to sum up - it was okay with a couple of standout moments and beautiful music - but it could've been so much more. I'd give it five, possibly six out of ten. It would've been eight if it was twenty minutes shorter and had a better Phantom.
It's also not a film to go see if your name is Christine. You'll be twitching all the way through. This is definitely going to be a film where the drinking game includes "Take one shot every time someone says 'Christine'".
Retail therapy today worked I think - spent far too much money but got a couple of very pretty tops and was greatly amused that I can fit into the small sizes in La Senza. I lost half a stone this term at uni but I've put half of it back on again since I got home. >_< Stupid 'rents, buying way too many cakes and chocolate. I was much happier when I was eating two meals a day with healthy snacks in between. So - going to be good till Christmas now. Gggrrr.
I think the muses are starting to reluctantly work on the Bounty sequel. Getting snippets and basic outlines. No idea when it'll be started but at least I'm getting there.
*flops* I'm exhausted. Shopping is terrible. Of course the lack of sleep I've had in the last few days probably doesn't help. But... student! Lack of Sleep is a way of life.
... Hhhm. Bored now.
