Apr. 19th, 2008 08:23 pmI loved 'Who this week. I was surprised about halfway through when it hit me how much it felt like real Doctor Who; I immediately wondered if that meant last series wasn't 'real' 'Who (I don't know; you'll have to take it up with my subconscious) but that's how it felt. Alien planet, sneaking around factories, creepy aliens. It had everything. And Donna just gets more and more awesome. I loved her and everything she said so much this week.
But just one thing or a couple: the Oood as native to an ice planet? When they have those unprotected tentacles and they carry their brains in their hands? Yeah. Right. They've clearly invented a cure for frostbite. And are technologically advanced enough to create lightweight cold-weather clothing, since they have nothing else to keep them warm. And have feet and hands adapated to a life on the ice, that in no way look like simply human hands in gloves! Of course not. It makes total utter perfect sense.
Oh wait; no it doesn't. It's utter cock. I thought for most of the episode 'oh well, maybe they imported them from another planet' but nope, then there would be no reason for the giant brain to be there (incidentally, did anyone else think of the Giant Brains from Futurama and start sniggering? No? Alas). I know it's a minor thing but it's lazy when there was no other reason for this to be set on an ice planet (except the kind of hilarious exchange at the beginning, which was admittedly worth the idiotic background for the Oood).
Also, I stopped following the pseudoscience at some point. The Oood need all their three brains to... sing? What? And the Oood who'd had them chopped off were somehow miraculously fine at the end? I guess because the episodes are so much better this series, I've stopped forgiving quite so many of the random things that don't make sense.
Finally, HE TURNED INTO AN OOOD. FROM DRINKING SOMETHING PSEUDOSCIENCEY. I'm sorry, that's just so ridiculous I felt it needed to be CAPSLOCKIFIED to match the sheer levels of WTF. I mean, huh? What? Did I miss the part where that made sense?
HOWEVER. These were minor complaints for what was really, a fun episode. I am so pleased with this series so far. I'm looking forward to the newly-butchered theme tune and bouncing and going "Yay! Doctor! Donna! Yay!" I was a little "What, already? Jesus" about Martha being there next week, because I would've liked another episode to really show off the Doctor/Donna dynamic but there are the Sontarans. As much as they are hilariously crap and look like potatoes grown in a spacesuit (the 'new design' ones even more so; at least at least the old ones could look a little freaky), I remember watching Doctor Who as a child and laughing with my brother at the Mr Potatoheads wandering around a moor somewhere, so I'm quite fond of the silly buggers. It'll be nice to see them again, even if the trailer wasn't very slickly put together and wasn't really confidence-inspiring. Potatoheads! Yay!
I still like Jessie on I'd Do Anything. I was a little puzzled that they raved so much over Rachel, who is good yeah but so are a few of the others. Then again, I am musically inept and my much more musically adept father says she's fantastic, so I'm probably missing something. I still think Jessie has the performance aspect down much better, no matter what they said this week. And I am sticking with my support for Francesca. I just like her voice; it's interesting and rich and nice to listen to. I'll be sad when His Webbyness kicks her out of the sing-off, as I fully expect him to do at some point because he doesn't really seem to like her.
Also, I couldn't believe they gave Keisha 'My Heart Will Go On'. I don't think she's as good as any of the others but that's no reason to give her songs that make her look worse. Ouch.

Date: 2008-04-19 09:57 pm (UTC)I like Jessie and Francesca best too. :D Jessie is just really awesome and I love Francesca's voice. It would handle the range of Nancy so much better than some of the others. I do not like Rachel AT ALL. She's okay but nothing more special than some of the others. I wish she would go away. Somewhere far away.

Date: 2008-04-20 01:45 pm (UTC)"hello Doctor, its martha. and i'm bringing you back to earth :)!!"
that really made me cringe. I didn't like Martha that much and I think putting her next to a good character (in my opinion) like Donna will just emphasise how annoying she really is.
On the plus side I don't think she's returning for the rest of the series. Is it like a two parter, then shes off for a bit and returning at the end? Hope so.

Date: 2008-04-23 11:09 am (UTC)Jessie is so awesomely bouncy and cheerful. And I love her voice, though I wish they’d give her less energetic things to sing to show it off more. Poor Francesca; I still can’t believe last week. :( She was too good to go out. I still don’t get why they’re all raving about Rachel. I don’t see what she’s doing that the others aren’t and I’m not musical enough to really judge the singing. You know, they Josephs said last year that everything sounded totally different in the studio, so they aren’t hearing what we are – I can definitely believe we’re hearing different things to the panel.

Date: 2008-04-23 11:15 am (UTC)I think so. I don't know if she's coming back for all three episodes at the end though; if she is we'll only have three Martha-free episodes. But those three episodes should also have Rose and that's awesome enough to make up for anything.
(Unrelated note: I just bought Dylan Moran's Monster off play. Am I allowed to watch it when it gets here or am I waiting until we can get together? :) )
