Is it a good thing or a bad thing that I can think of nothing to say? There were moments of Great Squee and (a few) moments of "huh?" and I'm left with "..." because I can't think of which was which.

But I enjoyed it. I loved it. At one point I actually thought "This is what I always hoped New 'Who would be." I just can't work out what was specifically so awesome.

Except maybe Jack saying to Martha "You too huh?" And Jack making tea (why did I find that so hilarious? I don't know.) The perception filter things because I could actually believe in them instead of it being a deus ex machina (like Jack's vortex-y thingy. Yeah. That was a bit disappointing but then, they do only have forty-five minutes so we'll let them off with it.)

John Simm. Absolutely everything said, done or acted by John Simm because he is genius and I need to watch Life on Mars now.

Disintegrating the President (because come on, Saxon may be The Bad Guy but we've all thought wistfully of a little disintegration now and then.)

Did not like Martha teleporting at the end because I couldn't find a basis for it, especially not at that point in the scene. Would've liked someone to spin round and aim a gun at her so she did it under duress, because I can't see how teleporting, utterly planless, to the surface is meant to be helpful in any way.

It probably says a lot about my reaction to Martha this series that I'm quite happy to watch her in episodes but I have no faith in her ability to do anything useful. At all. Enough already with the Rose comparisons but FOR EXAMPLE, had Rose done the same (leaving aside the glue permanantly attaching her to the Doctor) I'd be sitting here now going "I can't wait to find out what her plan is next week." Even if she didn't have a plan, I'd trust her enough to come up with something. Whereas with Martha, I'm going "I wonder how she'll accidently manage to save the world by accidentally bumping into people who actually know what they're doing?" Also, leaving Jack who might've actually been of some use in The Plan to Save the World? Um. Right. I just don't find Martha... *competent* enough, which is hugely disappointing when she looked so promising in the first episode. Sigh.

However, all is forgiven for the CGI of Gallifrey which was stunning and the handheld-camera approach to some of this episode. It was pretty much well-timed and fantastic (memo to Torchwood camera people: TAKE NOTE.) Old!Tennant was creepy. Beyond creepy. I have a low creep factor for actors I like in old person makeup. The last shot had me going "NO! LOOK AWAY, LOOK AWAY, DO NOT ZOOM IN YOU BASTARDS AAAARRRGGH."

Seriously. Creepy.

It did occur to me that this episode felt a little odd, because it's a sandwich-episode and a continuation rather than an initiation or resolvement of a plot. But then I realised it was only odd because 'Who doesn't do the ongoing plot thing much and it bugs me like hell that they don't. As frustrating as it can be to watch shows for weeks without a plot being solved, the infinite satisfaction you get as the story complexifies and expands is, for me, far more satisfying. MORE PLZ.

Will ruminate more over making dinner. Mmmmm. It was good though (I think). Just, maybe not good in the OMGSQUEE way of last week, more in a "Cooooooooooooool," sense.

edit: Also, Doctor/Master = canon. You better believe it. XD

The more I think about it, the more I realise it was awesome. I think it was a kind of unusual episode; I really need to watch it again so I can go splodey properly. (Wasn't the doctor/masterness fantastic? So, so wonderfully gay. :D)

Nah, Martha will have teleported because she has an idea/plan that she could not put into effect there. She also could not mention it to Jack or the Doctor without tipping off the Master.
Got to be fair that Rose spent most her first season running round being pretty useless untill the season finale when she saved all, so might be something similar this time,
