Jan. 23rd, 2007 12:37 pmQuick question for the Americans (which I shouldn't be asking, because I'm meant to be reading Shakespeare and not doing a run-through fic edit) -- with chocolate, is it *always* 'candy'? Would you refer to it as 'the candy bar', 'candy' and would you ever call it just 'the chocolate'?
In other news, I think I learnt something very practical and useful about writing in my seminar this morning, possibly for the first time this year. And people liked my novel opening, which gives me an inordinate amount of warm fuzzies. Has left me feeling motivated and cheerful in general.
Which is why I'm going to read Shakespeare and stop thinking about American English now. Yes.

Date: 2007-01-23 05:11 pm (UTC)of course, this is probably an irrelevant question now, 'cause I'm always late for these things. :-P

Date: 2007-01-23 05:29 pm (UTC)There’s a hot spot on the back of his neck that’s Andy’s eyes following him; he takes his time over the snacks deliberately, ignoring the other American as he weighs milk chocolate against plain. That decision made, he invents a few more that take him across the room to snag a fresh shirt, bathroom to change – because that’ll annoy Andy more – and run a damp hand through his hair with a grimace. Getting long again. Maybe he should get it cut before he goes home.
Only when he’s run out of excuses does he go back to the bedroom, candy bar in hand. Andy hasn’t moved except to close his eyes – sleeping, maybe, but he flinches when Mardy tosses the chocolate at his chest, too tense to keep up the pretend of sleep.
Or is that switching from candy to chocolate too often? I personally believe chocolate is chocolate (no matter what Tim Burton's Willy Wonka says dammit) which is why I wrote this, then re-read it this morning and went "... HOW DO I STILL FORGET THEY ARE AMERICAN?"
Not at all! Partly because I haven't written more yet but also, just these comments show how much it depends on different people. I didn't think about that.

Date: 2007-01-23 05:41 pm (UTC)It works, but there's a difference between milk chocolate and plain? *giggles* No, I know what you meant and it works. It's not switching because yeah, I think in that instance it would be referred to as a candy bar. *nods*
And yes! CHocolate is chocolate, everything else is candy! Dammit! *stomps foot* *giggles* No, you don't forget because I think the same way that you do.
YAY! I'm so used to being late that I just assumed I would be. As always! *nods* It's all about how you grew up, really. but they strike me as chocolate is chocolate and candy is candy people.

Date: 2007-01-23 05:58 pm (UTC)*woes* I never even thought of that. I use 'plain' pretty much interchangably with 'dark', so would dark work better? And okay, that is awesome because I was having candy-bar-versus-chocolate frustration all morning over this.
Thank you! :D!! Everyone looks at me crazy when I insist on that. I guess. Still, I should be remembering things like candy and sidewalk and... and all the other stuff, out of sheer habit now.
Nope, I had to go away and do lecture-y stuff, so I'd not long come back to LJ. I love all the little changes that aren't obvious until you think about them. Okay, that sounds good and I'll stick with it. *nods*

Date: 2007-01-23 06:05 pm (UTC)*giggles harder* Dark would work better, for Americans at least. I knew what you meant, and I think so would most people, but... well, yeah. *grin*
You're welcome. And no, you're not crazy. You should, but you don't think like an American, so no, you shouldn't remember thinks like that. ;-P Plus, it's been SOOOOOOOOOOO long since you've ficced tennis *pouts* that you wouldn't remember. :-P
Yay! Yeah, I still can't get used to some of the differences in the way we talk. :-P Stick with it 'cause it works. *nods*

Date: 2007-01-23 10:35 pm (UTC)Probably. *handwave* They don't show up for another several thousand words and we're only writing 500 a week (How we're supposed to *write a novel* with that.... Again. *handwave*)

Date: 2007-01-23 10:44 pm (UTC)That's good. ^_^ See, this is why I need a proper Americanism/Britism-check still, because all the time I spent worrying over candy and 'plain vs dark' didn't even occur to me.
... It has been a long time. *checks her fic folder* Marshmallow or the trophy smut was the last stuff I wrote, I think. And that wasn't finished. (5,000 words of trophy smut and the sex hasn't even *happened* yet. God. I should fix that.) I did write them for two years though. *grins* Plus, most of the fic I read is American-based...
Remember that time I said jumper instead of sweater without thinking and you went "...?"? I told my creative writing class about that the other day, during our tangent on words and how they change. And all the other things we've ended up confusing or explaining too. It's an awesome discussion topic. ^_^ Yep. *nods*

Date: 2007-01-23 10:47 pm (UTC)*blushes8 Thank you. I'd forgotten how hard I find Mardy to write though. -_- Tricky boy.

Date: 2007-01-23 10:49 pm (UTC)*giggles* Well, at least something good came from the stress. :-P
You know, I was just sorting through that fic journal and yes. You should finish trophy!smut & Marshmallow, 'cause I WANTS! *nods* This is true. And yes, but just because it's American based doesn't mean you're going to pick up stuff like that.
*giggles* That's funny. And yeah, 'cause jumper... yeah. Weirdness. Especially since we supposedly speak the same language. :-P

Date: 2007-01-23 11:07 pm (UTC)Definitely. ^_^ I learned new American word useage and you'll get fic a little faster. Probably.
I totally forget about that for ages and then have a binge on all the fic that's there because it's pretty. Marshmallow I seriously regret leaving, because it's one of the few things of mine that I can reread without wincing, much. And hey, I have another 1,300 words of trophy smut that I never posted there, complete with stuff that I want to change or edit underlined and bolded. Cool. Yeah, I know. I just feel like I should know these things after so long. :)
Yep, supposedly. ^_^ It's not until you actually start speaking it to a Brit/American that you realise it's really not.

Date: 2007-01-23 11:12 pm (UTC)I find Marat very tricky to write. My Mardymuse is a little quieter than my Andy one but he loves to tease Andy.

Date: 2007-01-23 11:15 pm (UTC)Writing Marat makes me constantly paranoid, because it's so bloody hard. I find him difficult to pin down the right tone for. My Mardy muse is quiet too. Which, when I watch the champagne thing, has me wondering how much of it is an act.

Date: 2007-01-23 11:16 pm (UTC)Exactly. *crosses fingers* Do I have to poke you to get fic?? 'Cause I can!!
*nods* Same here. I hadn't even thought about posting there until today when I was totally stuck on Andy/Mardy sex and so I posted there and wheee, it felt better... of coruse, I also had to poke back through entries and read stuff... distracting myself from my whole purpose. ;-) Marshmallow is beautiful, but all of your fic is. I wants it!! I WANTS IT!!! *grin* I know how you feel... like the other day, I was writing a fic and I knew, knew I should know the british term for something, but couldn't remember it at all. Lift versus elevator... and I couldn't remember lift. der.
Yeah. they should stop calling what I speak English and just finally admit it's American. 'Cause they're really actually very far apart.

Date: 2007-01-23 11:22 pm (UTC)God, I know. I always doubt that I'm writing Marat well because he's a complete headcase. At least Andy's a dork as well as sometimes being a headcase, he's much easier to pin down. Apparently, it's an act. There was an interview with Blake in Deuce Magazine a couple of months ago and he talks about Andy and Mardy, and how they've both very loud, fairly immature, and will joke around and tease people they have only just met.
And still my Mardymuse is quiet. I don't get it.
