Am fighting back with incense. At the very least it drowns the smell out in my room.
Memoirs of a Geisha! Pretty! From the opening shot I was so impressed. They did the whole complicated beginning well, though it wasn't the last time I was glad I'd read the book to fill in the backstory. And I remembered instantly why I *love* Japanese architecture; I could've sat and watched the whole thing just for that because *wow*, it was just stunning. They really took the time to *make* it all look beautiful too, adding in the extra shots here and there purely for the sake of asthetics which was definitely the right way to go. The whole thing is so sprawling plotwise that it was never going to survive on that alone, not without taking the extra time to make it all *look* as beautiful as it was meant to be. When I saw how long it was, it did make me go "whoa" but any shorter and it would've fallen flat. The moment with Sayuri under the cherry blossoms in the kimono with the pattern to match... I'll buy the DVD for that alone.
It did dip slightly in the middle, around the whole mizuagi (here's where I wish I had the book onhand to check spelling) bidding war. During the pivotal scene, I discovered my feet were stuck to the floor and -- keeping in mind that
astonish wrote me a drabble awhile back which explained exactly *why* cinema floors are sticky -- I had to fight giggles for a good five minutes, which probably says a lot about how much of my attention the film was holding right then. It picked back up again pretty quick though and moved along well to the end. It needs patience though this film. I get the feeling a lot of people not so interested in the asthetics of it all would give it a miss which is a shame.
Though perhaps I was biased by having read the book. Everything was easier to follow, the names, the places, the Japanese words. I must admit that I'd forgotten it was the Chairman Pumpkin brought at the end and not Nobu, so that was a shock. :) Overall fantastic though. Though Sayuri, Hatsumomo and Mameha especially were beautiful to the point of okay, I feel as graceful as a woolly mammoth right now but I guess the film wouldn't have worked otherwise. :)
wolves8 assures me that she did not, despite a suspicious tilt of the head, fall asleep. ;) Not that I would've blamed her if she had; the Morecambe cinema is nearly as bad as Lancaster's and, to add insult to a seriously bad neck from having to lean your head back to see the screen, they don't do student discount at weekends! It cost me less to go to the seventeen screen Vue in Cardiff and that was like watching a film in an armchair. So Morecambe gets a big red cross on it in our list of accessible cinemas. Next on the list, Preston. Hhhmm.
I have to go sort out those comments now. Oh dear. o_O I had no idea saying the terrible words "Andy" and "Maria" would spark such a dicussion.

Date: 2006-01-22 12:19 am (UTC)Cinemas are just overly expensive. London prices especially so, they are just insane. I think more people would go if they were less expensive. And they wonder why revenues were not as good this year at the box office.
Well, we did get off track with the comments ;) A lot.
