It's very uncomfortable, to be made to wonder if your opinion is right because people you respect are arguing the complete opposite. Makes you wonder just how blinkered you might be. Or just how blinkered they might be or whether there is no answer, only opinions. Because it is entirely possible to amicably agree to disagree with someone you respect but it's also possible to piss everybody off by arguing your point. Then again, if people throughout history hadn't argued their point, where would we be now? Compromise what you believe or fight for it and lose friends. Lose-lose situation.

I think I'm sticking with the philosophy of Dogma. Forget beliefs and have ideas. It's much easier to change an idea.

Not to mention ideas probably piss off fewer people.

I tend towards strong opinions too but usually the only thing I'll argue at any length on is religion, (mainly because I find even the "I'm right and you're wrong" arguments on that funny. ^_~) Mostly though I think confrontation is hardly ever worth it, except in those rare intellectually stimulating debates. :) Now *those* can be fun, especially when you come out the other side more appreciative of the other person's viewpoint. I get the "meh, can't be bothered' thing a lot too. Unless it's something I *know* in enough depth to argue and that I care about that much... it's easier to quietly back down. I think this particular post came from a 'feel very strongly about it and it *could* be a very interesting argument but I like the people with the opposing views too much for the risk of offending them to be worth it.' I guess I'm kinda compromising by simply keeping my mouth shut and that's sad, but I can see the other point-of-view too and it's got a good basis, so I'm not sure a debate wouldn't end in stalemate anyway. It's one of those things that could never be solved without something none of us will ever know. :) Interesting hypothetically, but ultimately *only* theoretical and I'm not sure I want to risk losing good friends over something that could all be proven wrong anyway. :)

We actually have a street in Lancaster called 'Golgotha Road'. I giggle every time I pass it on the bus. ^_^

Mmm, that is very true. I can see their point on this particular issue but that does make me think again, about how much that comes from me respecting them.
