Concert news...
Jul. 11th, 2005 11:23 amI did promise concert details post-pizza and though that was something like twelve hours ago, here are details.
We pretty much sat around the pub afternoon beforehand. Five hours sitting there, doing absolutely nothing on the hottest day of the year. *sighs* We could've gone down to see the bay or anything, but no, pub. I guess I wouldn't have minded so much if I'd known the people with us but although they were nice, they're my brothers friends and I really had nothing much to say. Frustrating waste of time when I have so much to do but nevermind. I swear, my brother works and sits in the pub - and that's *it*. How can anyone just do that constantly and not get bored?
But anyway, we headed over to the stadium at around half four and got in about five. We were standing on the pitch area in front of the stage, so we were fairly close but not right up in the front or anything. Sat around to wait for the first support act. I didn't realise how much sitting around there was in concerts - again, I think had I been with friends or people I at least knew better, it wouldn't have been so boring. Made me wish I'd brought a notebook so I could've doodled or ficced while we waited.
First band were called Death Valley and they were a little odd, not really what you'd asscociate with REM because they were so depressing when you listened to the lyrics. The singer did admit in this little awed voice that the stadium was the biggest place he'd ever seen which I think softened people towards them a bit and they had a few good songs. They were just... odd. The crowd was still filling up and hadn't really woken up yet I don't think, so they didn't get a huge reaction either.
More waiting. I was really starting to wonder if I'd wasted the entire day, when Idlewild came out.
Idlewild were *awesome*. They were worth the money for the ticket all by themselves and about two songs in, they did 'Sweet Home Alabama' which woke everyone right up, and made me very happy because I actually knew the words to sing along. ^__^ They did a great set and sang their new single, which sounded pretty good. I'd heard of them, but not really *heard* them, so it was a nice surprise and made all the waiting worth it. Was sad to see them go.
Waited ages for the last band, the Zutons to come out but when they did, they were pretty much as good as Idlewild. Made me wish L was there, because they had a girl playing some pretty damn awesome saxophone. They stayed on longer than the others but I think the main problem was that I just didn't know any of their songs, so they all kind of blurred together. Still, enjoyed them.
REM though, were *amazing*. They played a great mix of really new stuff, really old stuff - which had me going 'wtf?' since I'm not a dedicated enough fan to go out and buy all their old albums - and some stuff in between. I knew about one song in three, or maybe more like half so sang along for most of them. They played 'Wanderlust' which again, was worth the money for the ticket alone because it's just such an awesome song to sing along to, especially live. Leaving New York was fantastic too. They dedicated Everybody Hurts to the people in London and it was kind of surreal, to see the entire audience with their hands in the air, singing along. Some people were holding up lighters. It was a definite highlight not that I cried or anything. Ahem. They played for about an hour and a half then went off, and everyone cheered like crazy when the big screen went through a list of places on the tour and finally got to Cardiff. They came back out for more after about five minutes and Michael Stipes was wearing a Welsh rugby shirt with 'STIPES' across the back. *snickers* I think that went into the audience at some point, along with his belt, the setlist, his shirt... god knows what else. They played 'The Great Beyond' which I'd forgotten I adored so much and made my night, again. And their new single which sounds great, and a few other classics with some new stuff. All in all they played for about two hours and we got out about half ten, eleven. It was a great night, definitely worth going to. Despite all the tedious waiting. ;)
So that was my night. Going shopping now and to see War of the Worlds later. Should be home tomorrow evening and I'll catch up on stuff then, like comments.
Back later,
Clo

Date: 2005-07-11 07:23 pm (UTC)So very very random. However after sending my brother to Sainsburys for microwavable Carbonara sauce and having him come back with something you have to mix into goddamn mix and heat in a pan? Have concluded he has less common sense than a squashed hedgehog and can't really be blamed for anything. PJs weren't exactly flattering, no. -_- Really, brother is just proving my theory that men have no sense.
