clo_againI'm in one of those cheerful moods where you're happily bubbly enough to want to irritate everyone around you, just to let them know how happy you are. I don't know why I'm suddenly bouncy because I've not had any caffeine, I've not been watching tennis (although the Olympia Show Jumping's been on all afternoon and that's bounce-worthy) and I think I'm still half asleep, but happily bouncy all the same. Whee!
Has anyone heard of Benjamin Zephaniah? He's the guy I have to copy the style of in my next Creative Writing piece and having read his novel 'Face' last night... I find him mind-boggingly dull. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt right up to the point he started writing the dialogue as it was pronounced, namely using "dem" instead of "them" and "dis" instead of "this". Which is a pet peeve of mine and I *hate* it. I know these characters are London teenagers, I *know* how they'll be speaking, I don't need it spelled - badly - out for me. I could've coped if he'd been consistent in using it but after a few pages it disappeared completely, only to reappear a hundred or so pages later. So I'm hoping he's written better stuff - better prose I mean, since I flat out refuse to be coerced into writing poetry which is what he's known for - that I can base my style-mimicking on. The book had a good moral behind it but the writing style... definitely not for me. >_< Why the hell couldn't she have given us authors like Terry Pratchett, J.K. Rowling, Phillip Pullman and so on to mimick - I had to look for this guy's book in about three or four different stores before Borders came to the rescue and even then they only had the one novel (I say novel; it's about 200 pages with big font, which to me is basically a short story) - how are we supposed to mimick these people if we can't find multiple examples of their style *to* mimick?! Gggrrr. And personally I'd have loved to see my group try to copy some of these big name authors, who are of course big *because* they have distinctive styles. Differentiating between Pterry and Phillip Pullman would be easy, even from just a few paragraphs. I wish these tutors would think harder before they set us these stupid things to do. *sigh*
It actually feels like winter outside now. No snow here, which is so unfair, but at least the season seems to be getting back on track. It's nice to be able to wear my fleeces and jumpers again. ^___^ *pets winter*
I have slash ficlets to write... I just need to wake up enough to write them. Hhhm.
