The DragonLady "OMGYOULIKEDMYBOOKSENOUGHTOWRITEFANFICIDIDN'TPERMITONTHEMYOUHOR!!!*KILLS*", Anne McCaffrey herself has relaxed her rules on fanfic a little. Leaving aside the mention of 'registered' fanfic sites, which I find a little disturbing for some reason I can't quite pin down yet, I'm interested in this comment:

"5. Pornographic or “slasher” sites, based on any of my literary works, are expressly forbidden. But I’m sure you know that. I’m a grandmother, after all."

Now - though it's not my point - I'm hurt that she groups porn with slash. Yes, okay, so there is a vast - huge, massive, enormous - group of slash out there that can be labelled 'porn' but there's a *lot* of damn good stuff that's slash and yet wouldn't touch porn with a ten-foot pole. So that's one rant.

But my main confusion - she's written gay couples. Hell, from what I remember - haven't re-read the Pern series for a while, though I read them enough a few years ago - half -or more of - the lower Weyrs are basically gay. So... we're *not* allowed to write fanfic that takes canon fact from her own books, because it's considered slash? I couldn't start a site supporting the pairing of... *struggles to remember the names* (I hate not having my bookcase on hand) P'tero and M'leng (even if I wanted to ^__~)?

Am I missing a point here?!!

Hmm. Dunno 'bout that, but I knew someone once who thought that slash just meant porn. Or maybe she thinks "porn" is het porn, and "slash" is gay porn.

*sighs* If that's true I wish these writers would do their research. Condemning something without even knowing what it is... grrr.

And I like Pern's slash possiblities. Frankly they're much more interesting than the het pairings. Then again, I'd be surprised if she actually ever let us do anything interesting with fanfiction anyway. Letting us write it at all is enough of a shock.
