I am enjoying [livejournal.com profile] cidercupcakes post asking for everyone's favourite female characters way too much. Someone points out that Roald Dahl's Matilda ...had to move to the adult section of the local library after she's read all of the child's section. Plus her brain has magical powers. She's basically a younger, less screwed-up version of River Tam.! Someone nominated the awesome sorceress Maeve from a TV show I loved so long ago that I never thought to look for it on DVD until now! Because sure there's Buffy and Scully and Aeryn Sun but there's a whole lotta love being given to sometimes-forgotten or never-remembered female characters too. I kind of want to vote for all the ones I know and the ones I don't, I want to go out and find out about them. (By the way I nommed Chihiro from Spirited Away because I was a little surprised she wasn't already there by page 15. Go vote! :) )

And I'm not nominating her because I doubt anyone's actually read the books but I was rereading Monica Dickens'House at World's End series this morning and Carrie Fielding is totally kickass. She lies in the road in front of a van and pretends to be injured so she can rescue a horse! She hides in the boot of a car belonging to a man who lives in a rubbish dump so she can find out where he's hiding the dogs he's stealing to sell for medical experiments. Because her best friend says he was an elephant in a past life and she believes him utterly. Because she and Lester totally fly and they know it and don't talk about it.

...I kind of feel like I should nominate her now but instead I'll link the book series. It sucks that they're out of print because all kids should read them. I'm glad I bought the three I didn't have last year before they got more expensive.

Lot of love flying around for female characters = awesome! I slash the pretty guys so much, sometimes I forget to cheer for the awesome of the girls too. It's nice to be reminded.

Holy crap, trying to find an awesome girl icon for this post made me realise I DON'T HAVE ANY. Letting the side down here people. :-/ I really need to fix that.

Speaking of awesome, my mother pointed out earlier "The new Harry Potter's out today!" To which I replied "SO THE ENTIRE INTERNET HAS TOLD ME. But I don't have any money so..." *shrugs*

And then she said since they're running off to Edinburgh this weekend, they'd give me the money for trainfare to Lancaster (where I was going anyway) and for the cinema ticket. <3 So Harry Potter on Saturday! Hurrah! I was totally resigned to not seeing it. Plus if I make it up the hill behind the house on Friday I'll be able to reward myself with a cupcake on Sat. :) Everything looks much shinier.

[livejournal.com profile] mayakitten, I've been meaning to beg ask... you know the specials that are on over the GNW break? Like the debate that was on this week and I think they're showing the other Comedy Festival GNW ep etc... we're not getting them as podcasts so if you happen to be recording them and had some spare DVDs... *hopeful face* Hopefully by the end of August I'll have spare money and can inundate you with British comedy in return! ^_^
